Newbie Question: what is the difference in these program? I'm getting the hang of Daz, but maybe I should be learning Carara if that is a more powerful tool for animation. Does Cararra render faster? My daz shots are taking forever, even with optimized settings. Carrara might be worth the price if it background renders....

Here is some good discussion from earlier this year:
http://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/18748/
I myself have used Carrara so long it has become second nature, so I am very biased. It is extremely usable for animation with Poser style content, of which I own a large amount (not Genesis, but Gen4 and similar, and lots from other vendors). I am not a modeler, but I do use its modelling features to edit content.
I did try some earlier versions of DAZ Studio, and basically just threw up my hands in frustration. There are a few (very few) scenes that I have to use DS, but otherwise I use Carrara exclusively. I agree with 3DRendero in the discussion above, " ... Daz Studio does about 5% of what Carrara does ..."
On the downside, DAZ3D seems to heavily favor DS, even though they own Carrara. For example, Carrara 8.5 reportedly ships with Carrara V.7 documentation, plus some links to a few new feature docs. (I have only Carrara Pro V 8.1, I did not upgrade, since the upgrade price seemed to be mostly for Genesis content, which I don't want).
HTH
for animation another alternative is iClone
I am completely of agreement with Steve, and I am exactly in the same situation as him.
With generation 4, they are arrived at a very high level of modeling and animation, I did not see generations 5 and 6 yet but I am sure that the evolution must be done on the level of textures (Ringo Monfort has just proven it to us with its last creation: http://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/32648/
Perhaps as for Genesis, I am mistaken but I believe that it is intended to reach another category of users having less ambitions…
I tried sometimes to understand at greater “Studio” because its aniblocks are interesting: I was not able to find a normal timeline!
Here are may be 10 years that I use Carrara and I've created my first animation film without looking at any tutorial and the film was 12th on 75 at the festival of St Petersburg and with receipt the special price for the atmosphere, moreover it was selected to take part in the world contest which proceeded in Paris a few years ago !
It is to say that Carrara was extremely well conceived at the base.
I have begun a new feature-length film for 3 years and for that, I decided to learn Carrara very deeply, which enables me to say that it is an extremely powerful and complete software in spite of the few improvements to be brought.
Other softwares as Iclone have very good options of animation but do not give very good characters and renders.
I hope that the staff of DAZ will not drop a software which has of so great qualities… and for a reasonable price.
it doesn't matter which one you use - it's how you use it .
DazStudio was used to make a short and the person got funding to make a Movie .
A person made a 2 hr. movie using Bryce 5 and he is working on a new one .
