literally I have 100s of older scene files ... obviously on back up drives
but when I open a daz duf named
scene building 2023
and that name shows in the title bar of the program and I say save.,
it doesn't save (where I opened it over the file I opened) instead daz goes to my regular save folder and wants me to supply a name etc.
so it can save it again.

It's simple, I want to save the file I opened, where I opened it.
I see nothing in preferences that says simply save all (non-new) files where ever they were opened from.

Have you changed your username?
Yes, if the Author name in the file does not match the Author name set in the application (or if no Author name is set) then Save functions as Save As - it's a guard against overwriting third-party content.
author name has never changed.
But I did discover this.
yesterday the file I opened from drive L wanted to save in the drive C in the folder "3 daz scenes" (my name for my save folder)
I overrode that and browsed out to the L drive and saved it over the file that was opened.
Today (as part of testing) I opened the same file in the L drive and saved it and it did the save right there without any prompts etc.
Then I opened another file from the same folder on L and again did a save. It went to the correct folder but wanted me to name the file and when I picked the original I got the write over question.
So daz automatically goes back to the last folder it did a save in but it treats all files that it hasn't saved in that folder as a new file for saving purposes.

My combined scene file folder with duffs and there related renders is 234 g and has 50,000 files and 2000 folders.
Obviously, they were not all saved in the same folder orginally.

This is not just Daz BTW if you open a photoshop picture in say tiff format and save it, it saves where it was opened from but if you do a save as on the same image to save it as a jpg (for instance) it defaults not to the folder you started in but to the last place you saved anything.
It is the author name - hover over the a file you haven't resaved and it will show the Auto name in the tooltip, that will not be the same as the name you are currently using.
changed the names in the prefs (I think they were removed during the move to new computer and I had to repersonalize and missed that I used the whole name way back) so changed the name said apply ... and then opened a duf after checking to see if the names matched in the duf file then saved it
and it failed... because some changes in the preferences don't go live with apply but require the program to close and be restarted.
So it's working now. thank you
I didn't expect changing the author name to require a restart, sorry.
not to worry ...only shared the comment in case anyone else had to deal with it.
