Bizarre surface rendering bug

I have a skin surface that is rendering very odd.  I have a figure in an enclosed space (this wil be relevant later).  If I use Iray preview in the viewport, the render looks fine.  If I run an actual Iray render, any screenspace covered by the skin has a checkerboard pattern superimposed on it exactly matching what you would see in a render for a scene with empty space.  Almost like the entire figure had a slight degree of transparency.  This is of course not the case, and even if it was, you would see through to the background, not the infinite empty space pattern.

The only thing I can recall causing something even remotely similar is if the compression threshold is too low but I've cranked it well above the 4k resolution of the largest texture to no effect.

Screenshots attached of a quick (not 100%) Iray render (bugged) and Iray preview (fine).

EDIT FOLLOW UP: The checkerboarding happens even if the character is the only thing in the scene and lit with default HDRI settings.  Something i going on with the surface settings but I can't see what. Nothing looks off compared to other skin surfaces I've used.  It also doesn't appear to be an issue with the maps, as the checkerboarding persists if all maps are removed.
