Iray Terrain Decals can help you re-use some older sets that may not have had the best quality ground textures.

It can also make HDRI grounding more realistic by giving your character a ground material to interact with.

Included, is both a mesh decal, and an HDRI decal, along with lots of tiling and non-tiling materials, and an array of masks.

The ground decals include Icy, muddy, leafy, grassy, wet, and dry material selections to fit your particular ground type.

The materials tile within the mask itself, meaning you still get a gradual fall-off and no sharp edges at scale. Simply load, select your presets, and render.
