Paint It, Then Polish It: Prop Painter and MatineeFX by Stonemason

Prop Painter and MatineeFX are two new Daz Studio plug-ins from Daz 3D Published Artist Stonemason, and together they take your scene from bare set to big-screen finish. Prop Painter lets you brush leaves, rubble, gravel and grass straight onto your scene surfaces. MatineeFX gives your finished Iray render the cinematic treatment, with rich color grading, rolling fog, dreamy depth of field and glowing lens flares, all without rendering again.

No more placing pebbles one at a time. No more re-rendering just to try a warmer mood. Paint in the details, render once, then grade, glow and focus until your shot looks like a frame from a film. All inside Daz Studio.

Here’s what each plug-in does, and how to use them together.

Prop Painter: Brush On the Details

Prop Painter is a Daz Studio plug-in for painting and scattering props directly onto scene surfaces. Placing leaves, bricks and gravel one by one is some of the most time-consuming work in scene building; Prop Painter turns it into a fast, visual workflow. Pick the props you want, then paint them across terrain, floors, walls and other surfaces right in the Daz Studio viewport.

For example, Paint broad strokes to fill an area, or use single-click placement when you want one prop in exactly the right spot.

More detail, less busywork

  • Paint directly onto surfaces: Brush props across any object, or limit painting to a single material surface.
  • Create natural variation: Randomize scale, Y rotation, tilt, spacing and scatter so nothing looks copy-pasted. Mix several props in one stroke, with no back-to-back repeats.
  • Keep scenes lightweight: Every painted prop is a true Daz Studio instance, so hundreds of objects won’t bog down your scene.
  • Make props sit naturally: Surface alignment, Keep Upright, automatic grounding and overlap avoidance help each piece rest on the geometry beneath it.
  • Stay in control: Erase uncommitted props, undo a stroke, or select and adjust individual props with standard Daz Studio tools.
  • Lock it in: Commit to Mesh combines a paint batch into one permanent mesh with its UVs and materials, then you can keep painting new batches.

Use what you already own

Prop Painter includes a Starter Pack of blocks, bricks, gravel, leaves, grass, debris and paper, with textures optimized for Iray. In addition, you can also browse and paint with compatible DUF props from your existing library. Save favorites into custom categories for quick access; your original content files stay untouched.

Want more to paint with? Add-on packs like Urban Debris for Prop Painter and Grass and Weeds for Prop Painter expand your brush library.

For instance, dress a street with litter and rubble, scatter leaves across a forest floor, or pile debris around a ruined building. Paint it, place it, and bring your scene to life.

MatineeFX: The Render Is Just the Beginning

MatineeFX is a cinematic finishing workspace for Daz Studio 4 and Daz Studio 6. Shape color and contrast, build atmospheric depth, soften backgrounds and add the character of photographic lenses and film, all after your Iray scene has rendered.

For example, give a sunlit courtyard a warm cinematic finish, bring luminous color to a neon street, or draw the eye to a portrait with carefully placed focus. Additionally, try different treatments on the same render and compare them side by side, without rendering the scene again for each change.

How it works

Render with MatineeFX captures your Beauty image plus supporting passes, then opens the finishing workspace when the render is done. Automatic Float32 HDR handling makes use of available highlight information, while Distance and Emission data power depth-aware atmosphere, focus and optical effects.

Your finishing toolkit

  • Color grading: Exposure, contrast, midtones, shadows, highlights, color balance and film-inspired color response.
  • Atmosphere: Depth-aware haze, ground fog, textured atmospheric variation and foreground depth shaping.
  • Depth of field: Pick Focus, adjustable focus range, near and far blur, aperture shapes and HDR highlight response.
  • Lens flares: Individually placed flares with anamorphic streaks, lens ghosts, rings, star glints and coating-inspired color.
  • Light and glow: Bloom, halation, anamorphic glare and veiling glare, from gentle diffusion to dramatic light streaks.
  • Lens and film character: Chromatic aberration, vignette, lens dirt, light leaks, film grain and output sharpening.
  • Creative presets: Start from a built-in look, adjust its strength, or save your own recipes.
  • Clear comparisons: Before, After and Split views, per-effect bypass and full-resolution inspection.
  • Editable projects: Save and reopen sessions, create alternate versions and export finished images. Commit Look flattens your current treatment so you can start an additional finishing pass.

You can also open existing images for grading and supported effects. Depth-aware and HDR features need the matching source passes, and image-based depth of field has limits around transparency and complex overlapping edges.

One Workflow, Start to Finish, Inside Daz Studio

With Prop Painter and MatineeFX, Daz Studio now handles the full path from an empty set to a finished, graded image. You dress the scene, render it in Iray and give it a cinematic finish, all in one application. Here’s how that looks on a single image:

  1. Build the set. Load your environment, Genesis characters and lighting as usual.
  2. Paint the details. Use Prop Painter to scatter leaves, gravel, rubble or litter where the scene needs life. Commit batches to mesh once you’re happy.
  3. Render with MatineeFX. Capture the Beauty image and supporting passes in one Iray render.
  4. Find the look. Start from a preset, then grade color, add haze or ground fog, and set your focus point.
  5. Compare and export. Check Before, After and Split views, save alternate versions, and export your finished image at full resolution.

The result: richer scenes in less time, and a cinematic final image without exporting to a separate photo editor or compositing app.

Frequently asked questions

What is Prop Painter for Daz Studio? Prop Painter by Stonemason is a Daz Studio plug-in that lets you paint and scatter props like leaves, rubble, gravel and grass directly onto scene surfaces instead of placing each one by hand.

Can I use my own props with Prop Painter? Yes. Prop Painter works with compatible DUF props from your existing Daz Studio library, plus its included Starter Pack.

Will painting hundreds of props slow down my scene? No, because Prop Painter uses true Daz Studio instances, which keeps scenes lightweight even with large numbers of objects.

What is MatineeFX? MatineeFX by Stonemason is a cinematic finishing workspace for Daz Studio. It adds color grading, atmosphere, depth of field, lens flares, glow and film effects to Iray renders after rendering.

Do I need to re-render to try a different look in MatineeFX? No. MatineeFX captures your render and its supporting passes once, so you can try and compare treatments without rendering again.

Do these plug-ins work on Mac? Not currently. Both Prop Painter and MatineeFX support Windows only.

How do I scatter props in Daz Studio? The fastest way is Prop Painter. First, choose one or more props, then brush them onto any surface in the viewport. Scale, rotation, tilt and spacing are randomized for a natural look, and props are automatically grounded on the surface below.

How do I add depth of field or fog to a Daz Studio render without re-rendering? Render through MatineeFX, which captures depth (Distance) data along with your image. In the MatineeFX workspace, you can then set a focus point, add near and far blur, or layer in haze and ground fog, adjusting as often as you like without rendering again.

Who is Stonemason? Stonemason is a Daz 3D Published Artist who creates environments, props and tools for Daz Studio, including Prop Painter and MatineeFX.
