Daz Studio 4.5.1.6.Pro 32 Bit a HUGE dissappointment

I had been using Studio 3.1.2.3.2 for about a year with few if any problems. I have been making comic scenes, using 2-4 actors and environments like Dream House. I wanted to try the genesis figures because they looked better, and so I downloaded 4.5 . After getting used to the interface, I was impressed by how much better the models looked, how they could be morphed (with the exception of not having the ++ morphs you can use with Victoria 4.2 such as old, young, etc...just how do you make a Genesis model look older, anyway?) Unfortunately, the downside is frequent crashes, and difficulty saving scenes. For example, I made a scene with 2 Genesis models, a Victoria 4.2 and a room (furnished). I saved it. I tried to reload it and I am greeted with:

Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library

Runtime Error!

Program: C:\Program Files\DAZ3D\DAZStudio4\DAZStudio.exe

This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way.
Please contact the application's support team for more information.

So...that is what I am doing. Contacting the support team.

Going back to 3.2 until a solution is found. Obviously, another answer would be to have the Genesis figures usable with 3.2

Where is your content installed, and to what location are you trying to save?

Old content is installed in C:\Program Files\Curious Labs\Poser4

New content is in C:\Program Files\DAZ 3D\DAZStudio4 (default installation)

save files are in a folder on desktop.

I should point out that I was able to save some scenes with 1 actor, and 2 actors. I saved a few times successfully with 2 actors and a room. Then I added another dress or something and I got the above error

That's the problem: DS is trying to write data files for the dress to the first DS-format content folder, but Win7 protects the Program Files folder and moves the files to the Virtual Store. When you try to reload the scene, DS can't find them. The default location for user files in Win7 is under Documents.

That is not the default location for a Win7 install...

The content should not be in the Program Files folder under Vista or later.

For XP, it should be fine...did you by any chance install it in compatibility mode?

You can also try updating the Visual C runtimes, on your system...

Actually, I just checked and all of my content defaulted to the Poser 4 library. This is the same library that I've used for studio 3 with no problems. Why does where the library is matter?

Because since the release of Vista we have had a suite of nanny state security software controlling what you do, one of these is DEP, which stops you from saving user made data to the protected directories, they instead get dumped into your virtual store, which is why you can't get them to work.

Default content location for Poser was Program Files, but I think from P7 onwards it's something like "C:\Users\Public\Documents", with DS1 & 2 it was the same as Poser , but from the first build of DS3 the default became (My) Documents.

My saves are in a folder on desktop. The Poser4 library has all of the content (figures, clothing, etc)

Well, the scenes aren't being saved in a protected location, only the installed content.

Anyway, for reasons that are certainly unclear, the file loaded this am with no changes other than restarting the computer. The conundrum is that I don't know if I trust it enough to use. I started a new project with Studio 3, and if I continue with 4 it may crash again. But I doo like the Studio 4 models a little better. I'll have to think about this...

Your scene file might be in a folder on your desktop, but the data files that contain the mesh, morphs and UV info for that scene gets saved into the first DS native directory you have listed, and in your case that sounds like it's in Program Files which is one of the protected directories.

If what you are saying is true, why don't the scene loads fail all of the time instead of just sporadically? Also, if the directory protection is the issue, I've just taken ownership of it. We'll see if that works.

Well, that didn't work. I think it may have something to do with the size of the save files. They are enormous. Just a single figure with clothing is 20 mg, and the scene I was having trouble with is 96 mg (2 genesis figures, 1 V4 and a house). Save files in studio 3 are smaller, and I wasn't having trouble with those saves until they were about 70 mg, which was a much bigger house, well furnished and 5 figures (2 V4, 1 A4 and 2 M4)
