Daz Based Comic / Graphic Novel

Afternoon and apologies if this is in the wrong forum.!

I love Daz, I also love comics, so about 3 years ago a writer who was familiar with my work suggested that I should combine the style of art I was working on with comics to create something a bit different. We stayed in contact and he wrote out a story that we both thought could be a real showcase for the style. After a few weeks we both decided to collaborate for the duration of the project.

The idea in part came about because we were using tablets more for reading comic books and thought that a digital art based comic, when not rendered overly realistic, could look fantastic on today's tablets and mobile phones.

We started work on an original series of characters who would later interact with real historical people and characters of myth and legends. After my colleague wrote the first three issues we realised the immensity of this project so we decided to scale down a little and concentrate on one character to set the foundation for the story and roll it out in phases.

I'm happy to say that after months of re-writes, rendering, re‑rendering and even re-re-rendering we finally compiled the first issue of the mini-series "Twilight of the Gods - Medusa".  We launched (very quietly) on Amazon last month and over the past few weeks have been toiling away creating our social media platforms and some promotional material.  We also have been working on further issues and also have a Kickstarter due to release in the next few days.

We've used Daz Studio extensively along with Vue to create the 360 panoramic skies and composited in Photoshop and/or Hitfilm (when additional special effects were needed)

We're delighted to be able to finally tell people about this and also show artwork from it, especially here, a community I have really enjoyed interacting with over the years.

I've included some artwork here so you can get a feel of the style we're going for and also a couple of links to our Amazon and Facebook pages for you to have a look at if you're interested! Any help we can get through our social networking channels is hugely appreciated.

If you are PA and have created any of the sets, clothing or figures that we've used to make the cast, then on behalf of us at Digital Mythica we thank you immensely, and also plan at the end of the Medusa series to have a credits page where we would like to thank anyone who has contributed to this undertaking.

Thank you

Quite lovely Jay! The lighting and the expressions are very, very nice. Sultry on the second one.

One thing about the first one- are the woman's hands supposed to be chained? I don't see the chains.

  • Thank you Novica. I was hoping noone would notice the lack of chains..!  I must remember that the Daz forum notices everything.!

Very nice work. I think 3D tools have really opened the door for a lot of creativity, and it's nice to see someone take it to the end result. Best of luck with your project.

It was just $3. So I bought it. I'll let you know what I think later.

How exciting! I grabbed both copies through Kindle Unlimited. More than happy to read and review. I'm a writer that got into DAZ for promo and cover art. I'm looking at doing graphic novels some day for my superhero series, but certainly not ready to at the moment. Great to see someone doing this, and the previews look very good. Congratulations!

You're welcome, Jay. It'll be a couple of years before I am able to do it, probably once I get most of the Black Kat books published (working on the second one right now.) In the meantime, I want to study and support anyone out there who is doing this. It looks like a tremendous amount of work, but very rewarding too.

It really has been. There were times this year after we rewrote several scenes where we thought we'd never get it released, but there was a massive sense of relief once the first part hit the Amazon shelves. Uploading via Kindle was a fairly pain free experience (we were originally going to release through comixology but decided against it in the end).

If you don't mind me asking, what were your reasons? I'm involved in a project and Comixology is on the table as a possible option.

Hi Greg. Only a couple of reasons really. From what I remember I think every image needed to be 3k on its longest side which would have meant crazy render times especially for Vue and they also don't give you a statement to say how many copies you sell. Granted this was about a year and a half ago so they may have changed their processes now. We also thought we'd have better visibility on amazon and as we decided against pane navigation which to be fair comixology is great for, we plumped with Amazon. Hope that helps Cheers Jay

    Jay,

I really enjoyed both books. Just left ratings and reviews. You'll find them as "Hugh Harrison." He's a major character in my superhero series that loves to read. He leaves all the Amazon reviews and answers questions on reviews for the Black Kat series. wink

Great job! I can't imagine the amount of work that went into that!
