Arlene's render thread

He all! I'm fairly new to the site and actually using Daz studio. I used Bryce for a little while before hand as well various fractal software. So much to learn still, especially since I want to get more into modeling and animation. Friendly critique always welcome. I do have a slow pc so some stuff if there is something I don't like in the render, I don't usually go back and fix it lol. But I do save the files just in case. I really like all forms and it depends on my mood but I am focusing more on photo realism or close to it. I do photography in real life as a hobby and sometimes as income. I particularly enjoy boudior and weird/sci fi or fantasy type renders.

Here is a few renders I have done the last month or so. There is still a lot i need to learn and I'm glad communities like this exist lol. I am mostly using the basic content and free stuff atm. I have bought some stuff and plan on growing my library once I learn more. I want to create my own content as well.

The first one was my latest render. I was going for photorealism. She looks a little orangey in spots on my phone but on my pc it doens't look quite so noticeable. I'm gonna trust my pc color calibrations lol. I am still trying to comprehend and learn about the skin settings and hair to render photo realism. The hair is more fake looking imo than anything else. Also the ivy closer to the vase looks a little toony imo.

The girl with the dragon and the 2 with the little boy were some creations from me trying to pose them and the hands as well as expression. That was my main focus and they are the final product. Her boob I messed something up or it's a weird shadow. I had it rendering all night and decided not to go back and fix it. At least for a while lol. The other I wanted to have something in her hands of interest that they were looking at. A miniature kid worked out just fine lol! I was going to have the kid holding up a dragon in his hand but got tired and just rendered it. I didn't have the render settings set on high so it is still pretty noisy. I did clean up some in photoshop though. I want to rework this one and maybe eventually create a story around the concept.

The last one was my first attempt at IBL in Daz 4.9. I added only one light to give some highlights on like the rest of the wall. I adjusted the temp of the light to a warmer lower temp. I did another but it is a nude so no posting of that one. The only other ones I have done besides these were the barefoot dancer and the dagger pose tutorials that come with daz. For some reason on the barefoot dancer, the ivy always renders through her hair and head no matter what I did. Everytime it does that. Anyone else get that or is it just me lol?

To make these appear as in line images you need to click on the attachment, to bring it up to full size, right click there to get the drop down and then select "Copy image location"  to post in the image tool field.  Please when you do that can you restrict the width to 800 pixels, in order to make the images appear right on a variety of devices.

Welcome to the addiction... ummm I mean Daz Studio! You will learn a ton of stuff here in the forums, we are all pretty friendly and helpful.  Come over to the newbie contest thread and join in over there as well.  We do a different theme every month, its a great way to learn something new, get to know a bunch of people and get great feedback on stuff.  Here is the newbie contest forum.  You can go through previous months for a bunch of tips and tricks as well.

  • Welcome.  To be honest, I don't think I've ever done that barefoot dancer tutorial!  So, I'm not sure about the hair.  As Ice Dragon Art said, there is lots of helpful advice in the Newbie contest forum.  I'll have to take a look at the tutorial and the hair used and see if I can help you figure that out.

  • Welcome!  Great start on the renders.

Regarding your comment on the hair looking a little fake, and the ivy a little toony....hair is tough.  I recommend some of the hair specific Iray shaders like UHT2 or IDG's Iray Hair Essentials.

All of MEC4D's physically based shaders are awesome - try Volume 2 for organics like ivy, grass, and leaves.

I look forward to seeing more of your work!

Thank you @Chohole,  I was going to look up a tut on the forum basics lol, because I was unsure how to do that. When I click on the image attachement, it does not open up full size. These are small pics though, like 800 by 800 pixels, not sure if that has anything to do with it. Edit- Nevermind, i figured it out lol.

Thanks everyone for the welcome! :) I look forward to participating in the community.

@Knittingmommy, i will do it again and post the pic to show what i mean. Maybe it's just me lol!

@TabascoJack, thank you and thanks for the advice! I messed with skin and hair last night. Got it a little better.

I took the regular Victoria 7 skin materials that comes when you load her up and threw them into photoshop. This was my first attempt with fiddling with the skin and settings. I wanted a dirty/grungy look, and almost made zombie skin lol! I think it looks pretty cool. I want to show the skin on the body and I blocked out the nipples and the some of the breast but not sure if I can still post it? I'll redo it with a bikini. What I have doesn't show the legs anyways. So here is some headshots of the face with the edited skins, hair and settings and post processing. I wanted a darker and more aged/weathered look and i think it worked lol! I included a black and white one too. The other is the same setup minus the edited skins and hair and no post processing. Just the basic Iray victoria 7 skin and uber shading. I did not let it render completely. Only 4%. My finished edited ones were 15% My pc is pretty slow.. I posted these on facebook and it's nice that people thought it was real lol.

To be honest with you the top one looks fantastic, it looks like the woman is showing her age tough giggles with a bit of sun spots throughout the skin texture I just love it looks so much more natural.

Also lovethe middle one nice contrast with the black n white effect!!

  • @Saphirewild Thank you! That was what i was trying to achieve. I didn't want the airbrush makeup look. I'm currently working on another one, this time with some crazy virus lol. Basically a bunch of sick looking skin and veins lol. Hopefully I will have it finished by tonight or tomorrow.
