Carrara 8.5 Questions

Well I've finally finished all my non personal projects using car 8.1 and can move onto Car 8.5.

I spent a few hours watching PhilW's excellnt "what's new in Carrara 8.5."

I'm presently suprised on the autofit stuff and the fact that most of my 4th generation body poses come close to working.

I haven't been able to get smart content up and running so am presently reinstalling Daz Studio to see if that works.

But my first question about 8.5 is:

With eg Genesis, how do I mix in two different full body morphs - eg The Basic Child and The Gorilla? (solved thanks Stezza)

thanks in advance.

cheers :)

Depending how large your content is it may take a few minutes for Smart Content to load... PITA!

Just use the sliders under Actor/Parameters

    Slide the Basic Boy

    then slide the Gorilla

    Question 2 :) (solved thanks Stezza :) )

Can I load up a new Uv set for genesis using Carrara or do I need to go to Studio first?

    Daz says

Genesis uses multiple UV sets. By default, the base figure is set to Victoria 4's UV Map, but can be changed to the uv map for M4 or K4. So, just get the Texture Template for V4, M4, or K4. These are on the respective products pages for these base figures.

You can change the uv set in the Surface Tab in the property labeled 'UV Set.'

Other add-ons for Genesis may also have their own respective UV sets. These should be available on the product page. For example, the texture template for the Anubis add-on is on the product page for Genesis.

So, there's not a single uv set (Texture Template) for Genesis as it can be changed from the the V4 UV Map to the M4 or K4 map. Additional maps are possible with add-ons.

    Question 3: SOLVED: THANKS STEZZA

If I buy this product https://www.daz3d.com/v4-and-m4-shapes-for-genesis

Can I use eg M4 morphs I own on Genesis?

Do I need another product to use K4 morphs in Genesis?

thanks muchly  again in advance :)

edit: I found this for question 1

For Genesis and Genesis 2 Female there are UV presets.

In Carrara, for Genesis: Loading Victoria 5 will change the UV set to V5. Basic Female will load the V4 UV set (Also the default Genesis UV set). Basic Male loads the M4 UV set. Basic Child, loads the K4 UV set. M5 loads the M5 UV set, etc.

For Genesis 2 Female, Loading the base is the V5 UV set. Loading V6 is the V6 UV set, etc. I am pretty sure that there is a preset that loads the V4 UV set included with Michael Lane's V4 clone.

Note that any DUF material preset correctly sets the UV set in Carrara as well as the texture map. So for your use that is less of a problem than you believe it to be.

You need to start here for G & M4, V4 and add on what you need for V3,V4, G2 & 3 and use the DS plugin to get them show up in Carrara wink

well worth it once you get used to it... though I've ended up with an abundance of morphs to the point where I've got morph overload lol

    for your UVs

I just apply any M4/V4 textures to Genesis male/female figure from where they reside ( usually in my Poser structured folders )..  the usual fixups need doing but using Fenrics tweakers comes in handy there.

Applying G2 textures to G2 however I have to do manually most times.... sad

    edited again..

after loading a texture and getting it to my liking I will drag the global shader to my shader tab for future use.. saves doing it all again.

It is a really great feature of how you can mix sliders for looks!  I am a big fan of Sickleyield's die trying morphs FREE on ShareCg (hope it's OK to post as it's free stuff)

It would be great to have them for G3.... sigh.....  indecision  Silene

Also, as I am envious of the facial expressions for the G3 characters...you can buy a package of mix/match facial expressions for G2 (and earlier)  One for males and another for females by Elisa Griffin in the DAZ shop.  It does give more facial expression than the bog standard ones, but are a bit fiddley to use.

Oh and I just found these G2 high-level facial expressions by cakeone  In my basket today!

Thanks again Stezza for the quick answer.

I was playing a bit and found if I load basic child then add k4 textures it works well and I can load up a basic woman morph and the K4 textures still sit well????  Must check again tonight.

The following is an old thread, and it follows no logical order, but it does have answers to several questions and work arounds that I encountered when I made my own migration from 8.1 to 8.5.  Eventually, I was very glad that I did.  Most important thing, you will occasionally get a topology protection warning for genesis and genesis 2.  I started ignoring it.  Have yet to suffer a bad consequence for ignoring it.

    thanks Chickenman

PostrgeSQL  ? I need to look at it.

I have uses dim to download all my genesis stuff

I have reinstalled Studio to latest version and run it and it tells me CMS is running- yet when I look at my task list it is not running - windows 7.

Carrara 8.5 tells me it cant contact cms - so I havent got the smart content up and running - though it has worked previously

so running PostrgeSQL  would help? I havnt had a chance to read up on  the Valentina stuff.

smart content does not work for me at all

    in DAZ studio either

I just browse through my library in both apps

  • WendyLuvsCatzWendyLuvsCatz Posts: 38,179

the content tab where you add runtimes can also add the DAZ studio my library folder and see the duf files

  • StezzaStezza Posts: 8,048

you need to download PostgreSQL conversion tool and PostgreSQL CMS via the DiM

maybe that's why your Cararra smart content ain't working cool

also after that you may need to reimport the database metadatas in DS for it to show

thanks Wendy and Stezza once more :)

I like how getting it to work is so clear and easy :) thank Heaven for this forum

  • WendyLuvsCatzWendyLuvsCatz Posts: 38,179

well I can have 5 or 6 instances of Postgreysquirrel running in Task manager and still my smart content is dumb

it works, just not smartly, is rather useless as does not filter by selection etc

obviously my database works as search in D|S works and product lists etc

I am unconcerned, just pointed out you do not need to use it

I think having it in my 4.9 beta with 4.7 using Valentina may be the reason.

  • HeadwaxHeadwax Posts: 9,983

thanks Wendy, just feeling my way around,

I havnt used Dim before, it was fairly painless for the Genesis stuff, but of course I have no idea what I have :)

  • HeadwaxHeadwax Posts: 9,983

Had a win today - trying to bring in a Genesis Child  that was dressed in V4 clothes from studio (the clothes wouldnt fit properly in Carrara) I was getting the could not find Genesis.duf error  blah blah

so I had a light bulb moment added the genesis folder into my browser (not runtime)  - and presto - no more error (so far)

Today's Question  Any way of making Genesis actors default rendering smoothness a 1 as opposed to a 2?

    thanks in advance :)
