3d Delight vs Iray renders.

Hi all. I have rendered a 1955 chevy with both 3dDelight and Iray render engines. The first is our familiar 3d Delight, the second is the new Iray. Both in Daz 4.9 with NO postwork done. I used the Iray shaders for the Iray and Dazfires car shaders for the 3d Delight. You decide which is better. I have mixed feelings about them. I like the Iray shadows better, and the body surface looks very real for an older car! The windshield reflection is gone, but in the 3d Delight it is highly exagerated. The tires suck in Iray as does the mags. Great chrome in 3d Delight as always.Somewhere in between would be perfect. If you have any compairisons, feel free to post them for all to see. Any tips?...post them too.

Hi Music, that is no easy decision, as you said, some parts look better with one renderer and other with the other one. I believe there are some questions at hand to ask before any advice could be given.

For example the light settings are just not so easy to compare, if I want a similar light setting as in the iray render I would use a distant light with the shadows softened by 5 percent and at least an UeberEnvironment light2 with settings to soft/occlusion, probably a second distant light coming from behind in a darker blue gray with shadows all softened (all shadows raytrace). Or would use one from marshians reflective radiance for 3delight outdoor settings.

If I would want the car polish in iray look like in the 3delight render I would dabble around in the shader settings, similar for the glass... and such things more.

In general I would say that if your aim is photorealism Iray will be easier to handle for you. If you prefer to have the decision of what happens where in your own hands 3delight is your tool.

I would say as is that the 3Delight version is better.  Having said that and being an Iray girl, I would say that you would have much more success with your car in Iray if you had used better shaders.  I don't know about 3Delight since I so rarely use it but, in Iray, not all shaders look great.  The shaders make all the difference and it really shows here.  If I were you, I would try again using different shaders especially on the glass and the chrome.  But, even the car paint looks off in your Iray version and I would seriously look at changing that as well.

I was thinking the same thing. I only have a few shaders for the Iray and they are specifically for Iray. They are freebies and not so good. The chrome one I have looks nothing like chrome at all. It just looks greay even on the render. So, I used a chrome shader from my Daz 3.0 runtime from the past and I got what you see. The problem is...it has a refleaction that looks like a desert view. I added the parking lot as a reflection, like in the body, but it would not take it and just kept showint this weird desert reflection. I have gone through all the settings and even went through the files and I can not find that reflection map anywhere in the files. It's a mystery to me, but it looked far better than the Iray chrome, so I used it. The paint was my fault. I used a non metalic black car shader for older cars to give it an aged look. I wanted it to look like a real road car, not a show car spotless! Anyway, I will need to get me some better shaders. I am trying to learn how to make them and you tube has tons of learning videos on creating all kinds of surface blocks in Daz 4.9. I didn't know even existed. You can mix them and patch them together and cool stuff.

Thanks for commenting...here is the funny part. With the Iray render on the right...there were NO lights used at all. None. It produced it's own light angles and shadows. Cool huh?

well its not no lights as in Iray you have per default at least the environment, take a look at your render settings in NVIDIA IRAY, you will find a topic "Environment" and in the top row of that you have the environment mode which can be switchen between Dome and scene Dome only/ sun sky only and scene only.

In your render, as you changed nothing, the dome and scene will be chosen and give you light from the environment dome. You can make that visible when you switch to Draw Dome on, otherwise its just giving the light and I believe its seen in the reflections.

Linwelly is right, Iray defaults to a fairly low res HDRI "environment" for light with "Dome and Scene" setting.  Here are a couple different ones of Big Bill truck & trailer in Iray using a free HDRI.  I used Mec4D's PBS Iray shaders Vol. 1 and I highly recommend at least her first 2 sets as a great starting point.  Also there are a bunch of PC+ shader packs by JGreenless for lower cost options.

Edited to add a link to Tom2099's car megapack free shaders.

As you've been asking for comparisons between Iray and 3dl here is one for a portrait I've made. for more details see my thread https://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/comment/2272881/#Comment_2272881

3deligth left, iray right, these are without postwork, I made some adjustments in post, those you can see in my thread ( not clogging this one up with all my stuff laugh)

These give about the same results I have been getting. The 3dDelight seems to have more depth detail than the Iray, but the Iray works on the surfaces better by far. Look under her eyes and her forhead. Big difference. Up close the Iray wins hands down. Same with the big rig.
