Newbie Needs A Little Help With Planes.

This seems like it ought to be the simplest thing in the world, but I can't seem to figure it out, even looking at the menus within Daz3D 4.9. I want to create a horizontal plane, somewhere within my viewport. I don't even care where (since I am going to have to move it around to get exactly what I want), nor how big it is (since I am going to have to resize it anyway to fit with the rest of my scene's architecture). I went to "Create", "New Primitive", and a menu with several options appeared. I selected "Plane" under the type, and not knowing what any of the others (except for size) meant, left them at the default. Nothing appeared on my screen. I could clearly see that the plane now appeared in my Scene menu (the one docked on the right side of the screen by default), so I know that a plane now exists, but I can't find it within my viewport even after panning and zooming like mad trying to locate it. Can anyone explain A) what am I doing wrong, and B) how to do it right? Thanks a lot in advance for any help you can offer with this topic!

Try using the Frame button at top right (shortcut ctrl(Win)/cmd(Mac) F) with the pane selected in the Scene pane.

As a note on nomenclature, to help others follow what you doing, the thing that opens when you use the Create>New Primitive menu command is a dialgue (well, dialog but I'm not USian) and the things with settings that are permanently open are panes - in this case your meaning was clear but somtimes the distinction can matter.

The planes like all primitives are created at the world center. This 3D world center point is where the bigger lines of the foor grid meets. You should see the floor grid in your viewport the plane is propably laying on the floor with the floor grid on top and with a grey color not that diffrent from the viewport backround.

Check if your current Tool is the Universal Tool - if not go to the Tool Settings pane and select it. If you are using the Universal Tool you should also see the tools gizmo or how this thing with the colored arrows is called in the middle of the plane object.

Next to the colored box in the top right corner of the viewport there are some things you should check: first make shure the DrawStyle is set to its default state "Texture Shaded" and make shure you are in "Perspective View" because you cant see a plane from a straight side view.

Another tip that I find useful when moving things into place in the scene. Set a camera up to frame the shot, then when it comes to moving things into place switch to the Perspective view and use the frame command that Richard has mentioned. You have then drag the objects around to the place where it's supposed to be. Remember to switch back to the camera of course before you render.

  • Thanks a ton, guys. That helps. A lot. Sorry, for some reason I am having trouble finding my posts again after I create them, so I didn't even know about these responses until now.

When you create a new thread, or start following an existing thread, make sure the little star at the end of the title line is filled in orange. If it isn't, click to select. You will also have to check some of your forum settings so you get e-mail notifications, but it's been a while since I did that myself, and I've forgotten how.
