    @fishtales - I pulled up the scene and checked my render settings.  You were right.  My setting was "infinite sphere" rather than "infinite sphere with ground."  I usually do not really mess with those setting and always get a shadow.  However, when I was fooling around trying to get worldbase to work, I for the first time did play around with all those settings.  It looks like instead of going back to my original settings that include ground I left it on the last setting that i'd played with.  "Draw ground" was already on, but perhaps the other setting I just talked about nullified it/the shadow?   OHHH and thank you for the Control D trick.  That moved the dagger and lantern into better place.  I don't think it moved my character through.  I don't want to tie up my computer with a new render to check on that and the shadows just yet, but I have saved the scene and hopefully the setting save as well for later re-rendering.

    @Linwelly - The scene I posted was iray.  Prior to that, I was trying to use worldbase, which is 3delight.  So when I was trying to use that, I switched to 3delight for the first time.  Then I switched back, and my iray setting were kind of messed up (probably from me trying iray on worldbase and touching everything).

    @Knittingmommy - thanks for the hint re how to get better at pinning.  I will try that!

    @fishtales - I changed my character's pose and re-rendered.  He still does not seem to be casting a shadow, but I think other elements are casting some shadows.  I've also attached my settings.  I don't have any extra lights in the scene, perhaps that is the reason for the lack of shadows, if the water plane isn't the problem.

    With those settings, and the shadow set that high, then you should be getting deep black shadows. The bridge to the left has deep shadow so the ground is working, I'm not sure why it isn't shoing beneath the figures in the middle. Try moving the lantern back to where the bridge is and see if it casts a shadow.

    I upped the shadows after you told me it could be done (thanks for yet another tip).  I'll move stuff around in the scene and try again at my next opp.  Or I'll put him in a new setting and if shadows are fine, I suppose I could put this down to a fluke.  Or ghosts in my computer!

    I haven't played with iray (ancient computer), but.. isn't the water sort of interfering with the shadows? The figure seems to be on top of the water's surface (on top of the grid in the second image if I see it right - the water is at least partially below the grid). Isn't the reflection/refraction/stuff.. of the water somehow absorbing the shadows? What happens if you make the water invisible or remove it?

    Or am I just saying very stupid stuff now?

    No that's a valid point.  The quickest thing to test would be to take the water out and see if shadows are cast.  If they are, then you know the water is the problem and can use a ground plane or prop instead of the water.  Although, that might defeat the purpose if you really want him on the water.  But still a good test.

    When working I have the AUX Viewport open and set to Iray. I hide it, move the objects and then show it. It doesn't take that long to update and lets you view the scene without a full render.

    What background are you using and I will try it if I own it :)

    @Fishtales - I was using 1st Bastion's mid-forest vale.  I'm sure the set is fine.  I'll play with it more after work if I have time tonight, or if not, some time this week definitely.

    @icedragonard and @mori_mann - The first time I was playing with the environment, I was frustrated with my efforts to use worldbase.  I should have realized I could turn the water plane off and should have done that.  I didn't really want water under my character but it was a good "spot" in the environment.  I figured I could put in some photoshop work to hide the water.  However, Fishtales made a good point about my missing shadows so I thought I better at least figure that issue out.  I'll do tests with the water plane turned off when I can and will report back.  

    Thank you all for your advice.  I'm learning a lot obout what dials/buttons to fiddle with.  If you don't have issues, you never have a reason to learn what everything does, right?

    Ah, so i was on the wrong track there, well if interested I can give you some more insights into 3delight. with the current problem I'm out of ideas.

    Yup. That's how I learn the fastest lol. Something doesn't work and I have to try and track down what I am doing wrong.  So grateful for the forums here lol!

    FYI I did shut off the waterplane and do a partial re-render, and still had no shadows.  I may do more testing on the weekend or just start the scene from scratch so that any settings that I messed up will hopefully reset!

    My test render of Michael 8 with Alex hair.  I mostly like him, though I'm not wild about the eyebrows.  There is something about the curve of his cheek that may need adjustment as well  (edit - never mind, I think it is just the shadow of his hair curl lol).  Something is also going on with the texture on the henley he is wearing (under left arm and bottom middle), I'm not sure what it is.

    Edit - I don't know why his lips came out that shiny.  I'll do more renders to see if it's the lights or what.

    I am not a fan of M8, but you did a good job.

    Aylin is one of my all time favorites.  She is the High Queen of the world I am building lol.

    Oh, she turned out good.  I don't have her yet, but she is on the wishlist.  I like your render of her.  Nice lighting and shadows.

    Thank you @knittingmommy.  I believe this may be the first time my lighting came out good - I struggle a lot when I try to use added lights, lol.  

    Thank you @icedragonart.  I think M7 is better looking but M8 has possibilities.  Yes, Aylin is wonderful.  Funny story, even though she comes with black nails option, I forgot to use it.  So I ended up adding the black nails in photoshop one by one.  *facepalm*  I always forget something.  Be it adding an expression, or a prop I intended to include.  Silly, I know.

    Nope, not silly at all, I can't tell you how many times, halfway through a render I am looking at it going wait!  I forgot to add, do, move or whatever. All. the. time.  lol.

  • I made a loan shark using Gwenbleiz.  I started with the render settings that @novica kindly shared but made some adjustments because I didn't have the same lights.  Then I made photoshop edits to the background.  Used topaz for the black and white toon version.

  • Nice!  I like both versions.  The b&w one does a look a little more gritty, in a good way!  I'm with @Novica, though, I don't want to have to borrow money from him.  :)

    I did a quick test render of Jackson letting it render to only 80 percent.  He's a very cool character.  I can see using him in some sort of rock scene either playing a guitar or rocking out.

  • The loan shark looks great!  Very well done! And I'm with everyone else, I'm not borrowing money from him either!

    Jackson does look like he would make a great rock star.  Heavy metal maybe lol.

    I had a bit of fun today making fashion model type spreads with Eris.  I really like this characters because she's very versatile.  She can look edgy, classy or soft/romantic.  I usually render on my desktop which is fast.  OMG, this took two hours on the lap top and I didn't go for a high quality render either, so it's a bit grainy.  I think I will stick to the desktop for rendering since my laptop is not souped up.  

    First one is the render, second one the variations after post work including Rons brushes, various filters, and a bit of painting over.  I belatedly noticed her back seems too rounded at this angle.  I should have fixed the pose more.

  • How, exactly do you put the shadows in post?  I would be very interested in knowing how you do this.

    @IceDragonArt I just saw this, it's sort of eaiser to show then tell, I'll record a video and send you the link. 

    @Worlds_Edge to turn shadows off go into render settings and click teh button "draw ground" to off - that's how I do it, not sure if there's another way

    I think part of the problem in this one is your model is setting at y 0.0 and the water plane is below 0. you can see in your screen shot that your model is sitting on the y0 lines that indicate the ground plane if you render without a background, but your water is below this. Your guy should be in the water and not on top of it, the high lights from the water should be going over his feet, once he is touching the bottom of the ground you may get shadows. Ron's waterline brushes would work well here to to add some depth to the water around his arms and legs.

    love these! the postwork is fantastic and now you have to tell what dress that is so I can add that to my wishlist too. lol

    Thank you for the info re ground shadows and also for explaining about my water plane issue @deathbycanon  I've never paid any attention to the location above/below the line other than going oops, after a render, if a foot is sunken into the ground.  I now will pay better attention since there are other consequences lol.

    The dress is the syble outfit and it has quite a bit of variety.  I wish I'd changed my model's pose and the clothing textures for each of the four renders.  I'd have gotten more practice.  Then again, I just remembered I did it on the laptop which was slow going so... nope, lol
