Changing the colour to white means that it won't tint the existing color and will use whatever texture you have applied. Using greyscale colours will keep the colour, but reduce the brightness of that colour.

I notice when I change a setting for a color, cloth or a background it stays and doesn't reset..

if I wanted to reset anything back to original state each time I turn on the program or start over how would it be done?

if your clothing have material preset,, just apply again material preset (which have original texture or color about each properties)

but I know some figure may offered already applied texture and color. and have not original material preset.
so First,, you save it as material preset, and keep it.

After you tweak diffuse color, or apply some texture of the figure,,, then hope to restore default, (reset)
apply the material preset (original material) again.

When you change the settings for a surface, whether it's diffuse, bump or specular, it only changes it on the instance you created. If, for example, you created two primitive cubes and coloured one blue, the second would remain the default white.

If you restart Daz Studio or start a new scene, everything defaults to their original values when you add them to the scene. However, if you load an existing scene it will retain the settings you provided for it when you were working on it. As Kit above states, there are many material presets for objects, such as clothing, characters or props which you can apply. Doing so will set them to the default value for that material and override any settings you have changed since.

There are some minor exceptions to that, such as Omnifreaker's 'upgade' materials, which will change an existing type of material, but won't override any existing settings.

Sadly the item that I am trying to fix has no reset, or couldn't find it.

already tried that, and reinstalled it, I see only one choice per item and I assume it's the model not the material, the item is moonlight shadow by pretty3D

some items i got have the opposite problem Mats but no model, one is the high boots for V4

    Thank you Tramp Graphics

you gave me a good idea , I just double checked with "read me" and checked the files, wasn't installed correctly and I just putted the items in its right place for high boots...

sadly when I read "read me" for moonshadow it says I should have the model's w/o the mats... I guess I can work around it do a few coloring..

Moonlight Shadow states it comes with material presets. I'd double check you've downloaded all the necessary files and installed them correctly. Can you take a screenshot of your surfaces tab so we can help you restore it's former look?

    http://www.daz3d.com/moonlight-shadow
    it is your moonlight-shadow?

I think there is one material preset
    •DAZ Studio Material Presets (.DS)

but actually you need to check read me, and serch the material DS files.
in read me (if you have it), you can check file list.
    then serch file.

and even though there is no original mat preset,
(it is not unusuall, I think. often vendor offer material presets (with many pattern) as new product,
so that,, some product figure are aplied texture and material ,and there is no material preset.)

    as Herald said already,,
1 load the same clothing on the scene, ( you need not delete or change scene, not need to close ds)

2 select the new load clothing, then save the material preset of original clothing where you can find it easy.

3 apply the preset to the figure which you tweaked now. (the diffuse color have changed by you)

You can make material preset of original, whenever you want :)
and you never lose original material setting without save the figure as same name,

do not worry.. try to make new material preset which your make.
    :)
