Scene window question

What is the little check icon for? The one next to the arrow icon? I know that the "eye" is to visually toggle an object on or off in the scene. But can't figure what the second column is indicating. I'd love to know. (see image)

If it's ticked an item can be selected by clicking on it in the viewport, if it has an x then the item can't be selected by clicking on it in the viewport. I tend to toggle selectability off for cameras and lights, or for big scene props.

Yeah, there's nothing like spending an hour messing with the lights and then accidentally selecting one and moving ir off to Outer Mongolia or something...and not realizing it until it's too late to ctrl-z (usually right after you've just gotten something else placed that's been too troublesome to even think about redoing).
