create more space in frame - solved

I've set up my scene, changed focal length of the camera etc to create a dramatic shot and rendered a few versions of a boat. now I realize that I want a bit more space around the boat in my render, but I need the boat to line up exactly with the others for post production. If I zoom out, the shape of the boat changes, and it no longer lines up. If I increase the render size the boat keeps the same proportions within the frame. Is there a way to expand the size of the render window to include more of the background?
