How to fit clothing to morphed M4 character

edited December 1969 in New Users

I apologize if this question has been answered to death. I'm not entirely new to DAZ, but I'm still a novice, really. And since the last time I was in the forums, the look has changed and I can't find the 'search forum' option to see if there's already a thread that would answer this. Anyway....

I'm using M4 and I've made him a bit heavy, also dialed a little bodybuilder into him and I can't get even the most basic of clothing (the men's underwear for M4 that I purchased here) to fit him, even though the product says it includes many full and partial morphs. I had him selected when I added the shorts, made sure the shorts were 'fit' to M4, and they just disappear inside his body. In parameters, the only full body morph showing for the shorts is 'Adonis' which is no help at all. I've found threads about this for people working in Poser and there was talk about using "Include Morphs" and "Include Scales", but for the life of me I can't find the DAZ (3.1 is the version I'm using) equivalent of this.

I also tried fitting the shorts to the figure before making him heavier, and the same thing happens - as his body gets bigger, the shorts stay small and disappear inside the figure.

I'm hoping that this is something relatively simple and that I'm going to feel really stupid for not figuring it out... ;)

Since you are using DS3 Morph Follower is available for just that reason.

If you right click on the clothing item in the viewport, and select Morph Follower, that should put all the morphs you have used on the body into the clothing.

Okay, feeling dumber by the minute here, but I'm just not seeing that option anywhere. I just googled 'morph follower' to see what I was missing here, and found threads with screencaps on how to use it and what I have doesn't look anything like that. When I right click, I just get:

    Clear Selection
    Select All
    -------------------
    Select Michael 4: hip
Select Michael 4 - Dbl click
    -------------------
    Fit To
    Change Figure Parent
    Point At

Morph Follower was included with the 3.1 Advanced version but had to be purchased separately with the free version. Unfortunately; since DS3.1 is no longer supported; it doesn't seem to be in the store any more.

Looking at the M4 Underwear products; they appear not to have the Heavy morphs included (which is odd; since they have every other morph available). I guess there are no heavy people in the CG universe.

The Item must be Fit to First then select the Item in Viewport and Right click. Morph Follower should be the last item listed.

EDIT: Yes it is DS3A only.

Thanks for your help, you guys. I am using the free version, so I guess that's why 'morph follower' isn't showing up. (I did 'fit to' first.)

I had downloaded and installed 4.5 Pro with the intention of getting acquainted with it as soon as I have time to sit down and really learn -- I guess that time has to be now, lol. No quick, fast scene building with my heavy guy until I get acquainted with 4.5. I just opened him in that (which was a bit of a pain because it couldn't find any of the textures associated, etc. so I had to re-texture him), put the shorts on him, right clicked, and there was the 'transfer active morphs' option right there, big as you please. So now the shorts fit him great, but when I save him, there's only the option to save as a .duf file, so I guess I can't finish him in 3.1.

Of course, by the time I get comfortable with 4.5, there'll be a new version. ;)

Forgot to say, if anyone could point me in the direction of where to buy Morph Follower (since it's no longer sold here), I would greatly appreciate it.

The same thing (almost) exists in DS4 and DS4.5, but it is called Transfer Active Morphs now. Maybe you can't use DS4?

  • edited December 1969

Yeah, JimmyC, I tried him in 4.5 and using the 'transfer active morphs' got the shorts fitting him great. But I figured out why the textures weren't loading - because I had used the 1 Click Chest Hair and 1 Click Face Hair on him and that doesn't work in 4.5. Soooooo, my burly guy can have a hairy chest and beard (in 3.1) or clothes (in 4.5), but not both, lol. So yeah, I could really use Morph Follower. :)

Both of those do should work in 4.5. At least the 1-click face hair works for me.
I think your problem might be where the modified textures are stored on your drive & how DS3 saves the file paths when saving the scene.

I can't get either to work, so I looked the product up on DAZ and the chest hair, at least, said it was for DAZ 2 and 3, so I figured that was why. I've used them many, many times with no problem in 3.1, so I'm not sure where I'm going wrong in 4.5... time for more research.

I know I'm having issues with how things are saved -- regardless of where I 'save to', scenes get saved to my users folder rather than where I specified. I'm not sure what to do to get the 1 Click products working in 4.5, though; even in brand new scenes they aren't working. They're showing up in my content just fine - just nothing happens when I try to use. (It sucks to be technologically challenged, lol.)

For anyone else who comes across this thread and may be having similar problems... I just discovered that the 1 Click Face hair works fine in 4.5 on the Genesis character, but not M4. I'm a rank amateur here, so I have no idea what this means or what to do about it, but that's where I stand. Does 4.5 not allow full use of M4 and M4 props, poses, etc?

    It does certainly.

Even M3 works fine in DS4.5. I am sorry that I do not have the item, so I don;t know what is going on. Genesis and M4 are completely different characters, they are rigged differently as well, so why an M4 item will work on Genesis and not M4 surprises me greatly.

All Gen4 stuff should work correctly in DS4.5.

The 1-Click Face Hair is a texture add-on using the Layered Image Editor.

I don't understand why it's not working on M4 in DS4.5 for you; cleohs. I tried it earlier on M4 in DS 4.5 and it worked fine.

Thanks again for the info, everyone. I've been trying different things but still no luck getting the 1 Click stuff to work for me on M4. Yeah, I'm officially stumped. Maybe I'll give it a rest and try again another day when my brain feels fresher. I could always add body hair in postwork, I guess. I do wish I could still purchase the Morph Follower for now. When money's not so tight, I plan to get the Genesis Michael Victoria Combo Bundle and Gen X so that I can transfer my M4 characters over, but for now I'm gonna have to make do.

Took a break and then got back to it and it's just been non-stop problems. First, BWSman was spot on about this:

I think your problem might be where the modified textures are stored on your drive & how DS3 saves the file paths when saving the scene.

By moving those modified texture files, my character with chest hair will now load correctly. However, I still can't use the product on any new characters, unless I'm using the same skin texture and the same style chest hair and/or face hair style, which means that for any new character, I'd need to apply the face/chest hair in DAZ 3.1 first, and then move the modified texture files. I could live with that. But, then when I saved my changes in 4.5 as a .duf file --- the first time, the save didn't go through. The second attempt to save seemed to work fine, but when I reopened the file later, it said there were missing files and loaded the grey blocked form instead. I've found threads about this, but couldn't seem to find (or understand --- I'm sooooo not tech-savvy here) a solution.

After experimentation with other content - characters, props, etc. - it appears that the only .duf files that work for me are the ones created with nothing but content that came with 4.5. None of my old content will work. Obviously, this isn't going to work for me; I've invested too much $$$ in content to not be able to use any of it.

Which leads me back to needing Morph Follower, or the Advanced version of DAZ 3.1 in order to use my existing content and previously created characters and conform clothing to them if they're outside the 'norm' size wise.

I don't know if it would be appropriate or not to start a new thread begging for a copy of Morph Follower -- I'm not looking for illegally shared content here; I'd be all too happy to purchase it!

Have you MAPPED your DS3 Content folder to the DS4.5 Directory Prefs? Just Add it Under your DS4.5 paths just like it's listed in DS3. Then DS4.5 can read all your content and even your old scene files as long and it knows the proper paths.

  • edited December 1969

Yep, I added the location of my content to my content directory manager ( I think that's what you meant by mapping? Sorry, I'm not great with the terminology) and all of my content, including the 1 Click products show up - icons and all - in my content. ( Also my content directories do show up under 'Import Mapped Directories' as previously mapped.) And all my old content loads fine; just not the 1 Click products.

But still, I could work around that by loading the chest/face hair in 3.1 and then manually moving those modified textures from where 3.1 is sending them (a folder in my users directory), but I still can't seem to save a file that was previously a .daz file as a .duf file in 4.5 and have it be usable. I'm just honestly stumped.

Did you map it under both "Poser formats" and "DAZ Studio formats"?

  • edited December 1969

The chest hair is installed to Poser and I have my Poser content mapped, and the face hair is installed to DAZ and I have my DAZ content mapped. Neither work, though.

Can you go to Edit>Preferences>Content Library>Content Directory Manager, expand the "DAZ Studio formats" and "Poser formats" sections, and post a screenshot?

    You can do it manually.

    1. Select the texture you want to add the hair to in the surfaces tab (Skin Face, Skin Torso).
    2. Click on the drop-down menu for the texture in the Diffuse channel. Choose Layered Image Editor.
    3. Click on the [Zoom to Fit] button to show the whole texture in the preview area.
4.Click on the [+] button and select New Layer.
5 Click on the [Resource] button and select browse.
    6. Browse to the hair file you want to add (...Runtime/textures/Marieah/****/xxxxx.png
    7. scale and position to taste and click [Accept]

Thanks so much BWSman, I'm going to save those steps for adding the hair manually in the future, if I can make 4.5 usable for me. The manual application is a bit more trouble than the 1 Click, but like I said, I can live with that. The big problem I'm having now is that when I use any of my old content in 4.5 and save the scene as a .duf file, the first save doesn't go through, and the second one saves but then is unusable when I try to reopen -- all I get is grey blocks. From reading other threads, I'm wondering if this has something to do with the fact that my old DAZ, the 3.1 version was 32 bit and my 4.5 (and the computer I'm using) is 64 bit.

Fixmypcmike - I can get that screenshot for you in a bit...

The problem is that Windows 7 protects the Program Files folders. DS saves its Data files to the first listed DS-format content folder, but Windows is moving them to AppData, so DS isn't finding them where it expects them to be.

  • edited December 1969

Oh my god, success! Thank you so much!! I added the appdata location where I found the modified textures earlier and then moved it to the top of the list under 'DAZ Studio formats' and now I can save and reopen .duf files successfully. The 1 Click products still aren't working with 1 click, but hey, I'm A-okay with applying them manually using BWSman's directions. The important thing for me is that once they're added, the figure can be modified, saved, and reopened.

Thanks again, everyone, for all your help! :)

All your files would work if you moved the Folders to a new place and then Re-Mapped to that location.
Keep the Folder with the DATA files (saves) as the top folder if you do this.

Do NOT delete your old Folders until you test the NEW Folders. Just Remove them from your Directory Paths.
