Import is missing

Daz Studio is good at exporting various formats especially FBX works well but also mdd, bvh and Collada.

Unfortunately the same can not be said about import. Only bvh works so and so but for example Daz can for example not read Motionbuilder bvh files. And Daz can not even read their own export files of FBX and Collada which must be something of a record. Import mdd does not exists.

I cannot understand this. If I were to make a program export and import would be first priority would be the very first thing I would make. After all when not export and import function any sort of workflow or pipeline is impossible.

Have you made a bug report on your findings, and if so, can you please post a link here.

When posting here, it is a good idea to state the version of the program you are using, and your Operating System as well.

I have just tried importing files previously saved in DS4.5, as both Collada and FBX format, and they open correctly for me, what problems exactly are you having, and with what figures, clothing etc.

My version is the very latest 4.5.1.56_Win64.exe but the problems were the same in the all the last versions of the software. You need only to visit various forums there are at least a dozen forums that are fighting in vain with this. This issue goes beyond a simple bug, it is a policy thing. My operating system is Windows 7 and 8 it doesn't matter what OS you have.

Unless this is reported as a bug, DAZ 3D will not see it, as they seldom read the forums.

Posting threads like this on any of the forums here will not help to get the matter resolved, you MUST post a bug report, it is the only way to notify DAZ 3D officially.

and if you don't know how then have a look at this it might help. On this page http://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/306/ is a link named How To Make a Good Bug Report to DAZ 3D

I can't stress enough how important bug reports are not just for helping yourself but for helping other people too.

Before the final version of FBX it didn't matter because if you could not get data out of Daz you had no worries about getting data into Daz. But now, when the Fbx export is rock solid, when it is a dream to open up your Daz Avatar in Cinema 4D, Maya or Motionbuilder or whatever and get everything right from the beginning even the animation, then the comes the need to get data back in Daz Studio.

For instance what if you could enhance and detail you aniblock animation in Motionbuilder and import it back to studio? What if you could export your animation to Marvelous designer and get the simulated draped cloth back for further work and render? But no, it isn't for you.

There is no need to report something that they already know,
