When introducing a new item into a scenei Is there any way of making it go to a particular position.? I have terrible trouble trying to find them.

You can hold down the alt/opt key while dragging an item from the content pane - that will show a target icon on the ground plane (it doesn't allow for vertical offset) which will be treated as the temporary origin if you release the mouse, to drop the model into the scene, before the modifier.
