Render Size and Quality

I was nosing around yesterday and was looking at galleries over at Renderosity and noticed that the file size limit was 512. I normally render to my current view port so mine is generally twice that.
So it brought up a question - is it better to Render for a specific size or take a render and reduce the size in a paint program. I was wondering if reducing the size in a paint program would hurt the quality as opposed to just rendering it to the size straight way.
Or does it really matter?

I do not think you will be able to specify a file size at rendering time, the only way to do that is sort it in your image processing software.
The limit on Renderosity is by filesize of 512k, the image dimensions can go up to 4000x4000. You will need a decent graphics package with a good jpeg compressor to get a decent image into that small a filesize.
Now, to get a decent balance between quality and file compression I usually post on Renderosity at about 2000x2000, but then I also have a Deviantart gallery where I can post larger sized images with less compression.
Thanks! I'm such a noob. I was looking at 512 not "512K" lol. Oh well, now I know. I haven't posted anything but was wondering since I always do the viewport and not for any particular type of setting.
I always specify what size I want my render to be. I've always been able to do that in Poser, DAZ Studio, Carrara, Bryce and just about any other 3D rendering software application I've ever used.
I prefer to render to more than one size if I need to, rather than resizing it down in postwork.
Here is info for any who needs it. The first is your Render Size in Pixels Horizontal then Vertical. The second is Render to File instead of to Window.

Since the OP didn't specify kilobytes with the "file" size, and admitted so in another response, it would be difficult to determine exactly which she or he was referring to, especially since most newbies don't have a clue what the difference is between "file" size and "image" size since they use the terms interchangeably.

There isn't one. I've got a DA image uploaded at 10,000x10,000 pixels with a very large file size. I was curious about this myself so I did some investigating and apparently there literally is no limit. I wouldn't try to upload any images over a gigabyte though. I don't think anyone needs quite that high a resolution!

Yes, I recognized them. That particular 2D app is good for "down and dirty" projects like quick screenshots. I just never thought of using anything other than a plain "flat" arrow, but then this IS a 3D graphics forum, so I suppose your choice is appropriate. :-)
