Computer advice
I need to get a new PC. Given that I am getting into all this 3d business, can anyone tell me what I should be looking for for optimum DS performance? I want the shortest possible rendering times...
So am I looking for a massive graphics card, huge RAM, utrafast CPU? What are the key issues for 3d work?
Thanks

Daz Studio only uses the graphics card for OpenGL preview and the viewport. The 3Delight renderer doesn't use the gpu.
So if you want optimize for Daz Studio you'll want to focus on CPU and RAM.
The latest version of LuxRender is now capable of hybrid rendering (using the GPU and CPU to speed things up) so don't skimp too much on the graphics card. A good graphics card with about 1Gb of memory can make manoeuvring around in the viewport very easy.
You'll probably want a quad core CPU with a minimum of 8Gb of RAM (16 GB is better).
Thanks. Is an Intel i7 a quad core (sorry, don't know much about computers)
Yes, an i7 is quad core, I have one and I'm well pleased with it.
When rrendering in 3Delight, it uses 8 threads, two per core. I hve 16GB RAM, the max allowed for Win7 Home Premium, and it made a difference with the extra 8GB, especially when using Reality or Luxus (Luxrender)
Cool. Thanks.
I am thinking of getting a Novatech NTI39. It has an i7 3930K processor, 16GB of RAM and 2GB graphics (GTX680)
That sounds really good, especially the Graphics card. According to a site on the web, it has 1,536 CUDA cores, which should work hopefully on Luxrender at least, in hybrid mode, My card has only 36 cuda cores, and it helps to speed up Lux a bit, depending on what the render contains.
I'm not sure what a CUDA core is, but it sounds fun
They are used for OpenCL rendering, and they are a fairly recent innovation.
There is a renderer called Octane which only used the GC for rendering, and the larger the number of cores, the faster it renders. It ont make any difference to DAZ Studio, as it uses OpenGL, but it may in the future. Your card would be super for gaming I would think.
great! Thanks so much
I'm definitely no expert, but i've been told the GTX6xx series' OpenCL performance is subpar and that a similar priced AMD card will perform much better with regards to OpenCL and thus LuxRender. If your going to churn out the dollars for such a card, you might want to look into that.
That being said, i didn't take my own advice  I went for the GTX580, i just assumed the 5xx series wouldn't have that issue and didn't do any further research (the internet is full of opinions and they're all different). No regrets so far, that thing is blazing fast when rendering in LuxRender. It also doubles as a heater in my workroom, i actually turned the central heating down a notch :)
Thanks. In the end I went for a different system. It has 32GB of RAM and a 2GB AMD Radeon grahic card
A good idea, the more RAM the merrier.
