Hey guys, I am an experienced painter and have a degree in art and technology and use programs such as photoshop daily. I have recently decided to live out my boyhood dream and create a comic. I came across Daz and I thought it'd be a great tool. However I have absolutely no idea what I am doing and I am having trouble finding answers. My questions is I am interested in purchasing some of the western props but to do this I need to have purchased M4 first? Someone please correct me before I spend my money lol!

You should have genesis male characters with DAZ Studio.

What western props are you interested in buying that require M4?

    Welcome :-)

Clothing items are "figures" here as they are "rigged" to fit on characters such as Genesis. Genesis is the new kid on the block and that is why there appears to be so much more available for M4. However, traveling forward ... conversions are being made and people are creating more clothing for Genesis.

    This is a prop.
If something like a prop claims to require any figure, that would be for the "poses" which may or not work on other figures. [might require some tweaking]

The main thing to watch for with purchases is that there are 'base' products and "texture sets". The texture sets require the base product in order to be fully usable. Some texture sets add in an extra prop or two.

Also, if you see a clothing item for Genesis but don't like the material ... that's not a problem. One can easily change the materials ... templates for making new textures are often on the product's page for immediate download under "Resources".

Studio's AutoFit will convert clothing for V4 and M4 to fit Genesis. It works well with most tight fitting and male clothes but has some problems with skirts and high heals.

You must install the Genesis Starter Essentials file to get the free content, the Genesis figures comes with that, and it can be male or female. There is a lot of other useful stuff as well.

The contents list is here : http://docs.daz3d.com/doku.php/public/read_me/index/14812/start

Don't feel bad, there's was a big "What do I do?" feeling by a lot of us when we started. But you have to read the forum threads, seriously- to speed up your learning curve. And sometimes typing a key word in the search (up where it says search the forum) doesn't work as well as typing it in Google! (which directs you to the thread. I'm being serious here!)

There have been many, many threads on Genesis, so just type that in and see what comes up.

One thing that is totally confusing though- is when you look at some products, it says required products, and sometimes you don't need ALL of them. It may say Victoria 4, Aiko 4, etc- but if you are not using it ON Aiko 4, you don't have to buy Aiko 4 for it to work. That's misleading and I hate that- because of morphing, I was wondering when I first started if I had to have all of those to make things work. And sometimes the related products (what figures it works on) aren't listed. They really need to clean things up.

novica! you bring up an interesting point and i too am very confused about that.

so lets say I was to purchase this :

it says victoria 4 and michael 4 are the compatible figures. so does that mean i can or cant use it on the preset basic male and female characters (i just discovered came with) daz?

That is a Texture set for the Saloon that is Required. Not Clothing for Characters. It shows the Figures as they COULD look if you used them in the Set (the Saloon).

EDIT: Its a POSE set to make the figures stand and pose as shown. They will work, in any set by the way. Poses can be used at anytime in any set.

    The Saloon interior: http://www.daz3d.com/the-old-west-saloon-interior

is an add-on pack for this: http://www.daz3d.com/old-west-saloon

btw - if you have a PC membership, both of these items are only $1.99 each.

And there's a free or free with purchase horse in the freebies section. Also a dog and a cat ;-)

If you're going to buy a lot, I'd definitely take a look at the PC membership. The monthly one is $30 for the first month, and $8 for every month after, but you can cancel whenever you want. You'll more than recoup the first month with the Western 1.99 PC club products.

Plus, now is one of the best times to buy the start up stuff, since it's March Madness, and if you're a PC club member you can get DAZ Originals up to 70% off.

Well said!!!! And there are all the special sales, plus getting new items at a discount. :) The PC club is great for fiddling around with things, you get to experiment with a LOT more things that maybe you normally wouldn't have bought. Those freebies can be surprising too.

I'm using DS to make comic strips, and so far have managed just using free props and figures from various places (mainly ShareCG and Renderosity, but a bunch of others too). You can get some good quality stuff for free. I'd check that out before spending money.
