How to make OBJ props?

I've downloaded lots of OBJ files for use in DS4, and am thinking of having a go at making some basic stuff myself. What software would people recommend?
It would have to be free and quick to learn. Also I would like to be able to texture the props, I don't know if that would be a different software package to the modelling one or not?

Blender; Wings3D are both free modelling apps that can create UV layouts for texturing. There are a couple more free modelling apps; but I'm drawing a blank on their names. Both apps will have a learning curve.

Depending on what you mean by BASIC stuff you might have half the needed software at your fingertips right now. I use Create Primitive and loads of Deformers in DS itself to make fast props. The Export as Object has an option to WELD the meshes into a single object. You would then need to UV map the object for proper texturing. To me this is the Fastest way to Create BASIC props.

quick to learn and modeling don't normal come in the same sentence.

Blender is an amazing Open Source app hence being free but the GUI is pretty complex but the main thing is the weath of tutorials out there. Blender Cookie have a load of free Blender related education and organised.

    Thanks for the info, peeps.
By basic, I mean low poly spaceships and buildings that probably wouldn't be used close up. At the moment, creating primatives is probably my best best, as I don't want to invest a great deal of time learning complex new software (I still haven't got to grips with half of DS yet!). I may try "proper" model creation some time in the future though.
    So, a couple more questions:
I know how to create a primative in DS, but deformers are new to me. Is there a thread or tutorial that can explain using them in terms even a novice like me can undrstand?

When I create a prop and export it as welded together, where would I export it to? And how do I UV map an object for texturing? Oh, and what exactly IS a uv map?

    Thnaks again for the advise.

Deformers would work but you would be using one deformer for each Deform of the mesh/s agian best using a modelling App. This is not to say you can't do it. :)
    Carnite's Deformer Vid http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7SEBV2GHJHA

UVmapping cannot be done within Daz Studio so a modelling app is the way to go. When we work in 3D we have have 3 dimensions X, Y and Z, UVmap is what you get when you flatten the mesh out on to a 2D plane with two axis, U and V, Up and Down in simple terms http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UV_mapping

LOL! Boy that was a mouthful. I'll hunt you a good Deformer Tut if someone else does not beat me to it.

The Export part is Easy, any folder you like. You will need to Import the Object back into DS so use a folder you can remember/find easy.
A UV map is a texture Map template. Without a UV map only shaders can be saved as the Surfaces settings. I'll also hunt a Program for the UVing and some tut's on it.

EDIT: Szark pulled the Best Deformer tut going. I learning by using it myself.

Seriously Bender has it all with very good UVmapping plus it has the ability to export meshes without Normals which Daz Studio requires. Lighwave cannot do this hence why UVAmpper Pro etc come in to the equation.
