This is the one I'm keeping for now. The intensities of the lights were actually lowered 10-15% (most of them) and I brought in a POINT LIGHT to help illuminate sea gull from the underneath. That keeps the legs looking more 3d instead of flat, gives it a bit of a glow, and helps with the hand. Don't forget point lights for areas that need a tiny bit of "oomph."
I like the way this one turned out!
And I do tend to forget about the point lights and usually go for the distant lights.
When I first started all I ever used were points..ahh, good times...
thanks, it's a WIP but I like it too :) I only spent about 45 minutes on the lights whereas my finished stuff is more along the lines of hours to a week or more. If I come back to it, I want to add a touch of DOF, if that's possible, to the back bamboo. It's awfully close to the gull and Chiara so it may be more of a hassle than it's worth.
Point lights are also great for overhead glow. I try them sometimes instead of distant lights for the overheads.
Seychelle's Fashionista Pattern 1
I'm playing with lights, so these are test renders. Then I thought, "Why not do something else at the same time?" So...
Seychelle has a gift for you. She is a fastionista. She wants you to try out her new pattern line. Change up some clothes, hats, vases, towels, pillows, furniture... anything with a surface! Newbies, this is easy.
1. Select the surface using the Surface Selection Tool (three black sheets of paper by Universal Tool)
2. Go to Surfaces Tab, Editor should be selected. You'll see the surface name highlighted in gold.
3. In the Diffuse Channel, there's a box to the left of the color numbers. Click to open it, and browse to your image. Add it. Your surface now has this pattern. Change the diffuse color to either white or a light color that matches the pattern.
4. Want to change the texture? Put the image in bump channel for the illusion of texture, and/or displacement channel which MOVES the mesh. (in other words, the real deal, the mesh moves.) I usually just "bump" it a bit to start with. This has bump 100% strength, both positive (.50) and negative (-.50) and displacement was at 75% strength (.050 and -.050)
TAKE A LOOK AT THE ORIGINAL CLOTHING : http://www.daz3d.com/hot-cabana-wear
You can change the trim, and the main body area. You can change the mesh color on the sides.
Suggestion: use the same pattern for the trim, just darken it. (Like I did.)
This pattern has one dimension out to 2000 pixels. (Forum limit.) You can make it bigger simply by increasing the dpi
The pattern you get is the exact pattern shown, at that size. Enjoy, this is an original pattern I made with a pattern maker.
JUST RIGHT CLICK AND SAVE THE PATTERN. EASY!
Pictured: Catwalk Hair. Switching to Udane Hair so you can compare. Udane Hair has a glossy setting too.
Seychelle’s Fashionista Pattern 2
Rockin' in with a different light set, Chiara now sports the Udane Hair. (A lot easier to pose than Catwalk, if you'll remember that discussion about the thin straggly strands of Catwalk. You can thicken the ends, but not the shaft, of one section that goes in front.)
Seychelle’s Fashionista Pattern 3
For a hot attitude, or a change up heading into Fall, sport your oranges and rusty colors!
Yes, hard to believe THIS pattern is the one you're seeing. It all has to do with the size of the pattern tile. (and the size of the surface applied to.) EDIT: I also put orange in the diffuse, so that's why the yellow swirls aren't bright yellow.
Hmm.. You do good work but I'm wondering why your not doing square textures and seamless. Then you could do all this Tileable and have way more looks for your work.
EDIT to ADD the Background color from the 2D art program should be the Diffuse color to match the proper color saturation of the fabric.
Seychelle’s Fashionista Pattern 4
Nothing soothes more than the blues.
Thanks, just playing. This just shows these "as is" so you don't have to settle for a repetitive pattern- it shows what you can do with an abstract.
They didn't come in squares, they were odd shaped. The last one I changed the height and width to be 2000 x 2000 as the width was really, really "out there." The horizontal and vertical tiles are each set to 1.0, with offset 0. Care to enlighten on getting it "seamless?"
You lost me with the 2D comment. (Not hard to do. It's me, not you.) The background color is just the background in the studio, if that's what you're referring to?
Nice renders, and I the character has a realistic look. The bathing suits have pretty patterns. =-)

You lost me with the 2D comment. (Not hard to do. It's me, not you.) The background color is just the background in the studio, if that's what you're referring to? I was thinking you MADE these in a 2D art program like Gimp or Photoshop. I never thought they were just downloaded. The proper Diffuse Color would still be the LOAD color of the image background in any Art program, I can choose white, black or anything including transparent. The Color will POP more if that is the same in DS as it was in the SAVE of the image. White, Black is normal.
Any Square seamless texture can be saved as a tileable shader. You will need to have a 2D art program that can save/convert images to SEAMLESS to make the square. You then make a square primitive plane in DS and add the image as the Diffuse image map. And select it in the Surfaces Tab and Save As Shader Asset. You can then Tile that shader on any mat zone on any item in your scene. It works just like making new things for Fabricator.
Ah very interesting. Thank you for the tip... May have to try that out sometime.
Not really following the first part of that, as the Diffuse is used to either keep the tile the overall color (white for that purpose) or to tint it if I want a different color (say adding pink if I want a different shade of purple.) I had read several times how to make the shaders so that wasn't new, but am having trouble with the tutorials I've found for photo paint to make "seamless" as one of the steps isn't there (they say go to Object and do blah blah blah and it isn't an option- to do the "offset" step.)
This one is where I took THE LAST PATTERN, put it in the middle, put bars on both the left and right edges, just to see what it did. I'm still looking at the seamless but there's some seamless pattern makers so may just go that route. I've got other things to do first, but appreciate the tips. :)
In the meantime, if anyone else likes abstract, I will post what I'm playing with and maybe experiment with tiling later. I like the abstract to break up the monotony of tiling/repetitive.
Open any Art program and Click NEW. Most times you get a option for the Background color for the image to be drawn on. Most art programs default to white but give other choices.
Now load any Image in the same art program, in the Default color list the Background color is normally the first color or shown in some way in the menu's. That is the Color the image was designed on and is why the image has that color depth.
The part about Matching that Color in DS is only IF a user wishes the Color pallet to MATCH the Image which often makes the RENDER of the texture look better, Yes you can change it. That was only if you wanted the texture to MATCH as much as possible in the render. It was only a tip if a user did not know that all images are not drawn on white as the default background.
I'm finding a lot of interesting stuff when I search "seamless tiles." It's interesting to see old forums on other sites where things were "free" that are now $100.00 and they offer the same seamless shader-types that DAZ has in products for under $20.00
We've got Photoshop so one of these days I'll use that, I did confirm the Corel Photo Paint step was removed in later editions so it wasn't available for me to use. Waste of time, getting through a tutorial and then 3/4 of the way there the step is missing. GRRRR. Had something to do with offsetting, I can't remember exactly as that was an hour ago.
Just putzing. Thanks Jaderail :)
Well this works out to get two items at 30% and one item for 10 cents. The sale is 3 items makes it 50% off original price for all 3.
These are shown at 30%
Breaking Waves $6.97, A Walk Across Water $11.87, Lunar Craters Moonscape $7.67 and those total $26.51, but at 50% off (the original price) the cart is taking off $7.57- only 10 cents off of the price of the Moonscape, lol!
http://www.daz3d.com/cliff-and-climb if you haven't seen it is pretty cool- the rock placement moves with your figure's hands. You get 24 poses with this. And as it says, there are a lot of nooks so you can do things other than just climb. It also makes a great backdrop!
http://www.daz3d.com/a-flight-of-stairs and of course, it's nice that the promo light set is included. I like that it has the building with the window you can look in- think horror- people racing down the stairs with whatever it is looking in the window!
Fire And Smoke For DAZ Studio
Toon Ghost 2.0
http://www.daz3d.com/fire-and-smoke-for-daz-studio
http://www.daz3d.com/toon-ghost-2-0
This was in one of the sales a few days ago, I already had it but it has sat there in my Product Library looking sad and forlorn for months and months. So these sales are a good thing, they remind me to test out some of the things.
THIS LITTLE GEM IS ONLY $8.95. If you don't have it, consider it. It's PLAYTIME!
Now, this is a special render coming up. It's my second one that never got published because it was a WIP, I was working on the facial lighting (eyes) and that hand, and it was done a few days after my first one. I had spent five weeks on the first one and was burnt out so moved on, and poor Kaetl got forgotten. I'm not changing anything, going to leave it as is, because when I go back to work on it, I'm going to take my time.
I did all the lighting by trial and error, didn't know a thing but just kept at it, and there's over 20 lights in this set. I did share the skin color trial and error waaaaay back in this thread, and how I worked for days just to get a tiny sliver of light placed just-so. (I still do that, but now it takes me about an hour or less.)
So, I thought instead of re-creating the wheel, I'd bring Kaetl and her baby dragons back out to celebrate going on one year with DAZ (coming up the second week of September) and we're going to use a recent FAST GRAB (Toon Ghost) to test out the Fire And Smoke For DAZ Studio.
So what I'm doing is leaving the smoke alone so you can see how it is "out of the box" and I put the toon ghost at about 65% opacity.
Here's some of my findings- and keep in mind, this is my first try so...
1. Point lights in the smoke are a lot harder than spotlights- they do leave the glow-burn (concentrated areas of color) and don't produce that great of effect compared to the time spend trying to manipulate them in proximity to the fog to avoid the burn. Use spot lights. Shoot up, shoot down.
2. Someone in the fog? Place your character first. And realize you may have to sacrifice some color of the fog, because your person is going to get whanged with it too. You wouldn't believe the awesome glowing purple, pink, green, blue smoke- that went bye bye because of dear old Casper.
Now, how does this work? Well, the ReadMe doesn't say squat. That is a little daunting perhaps for those of you who don't know exactly what these special effects do. No, you don't paint them on with the Universal Tool, this isn't a shader- think of it as a physical object just like anything else in the scene. You can change the opacity, the color, (it comes with material presets so you can choose the color of the smoke) and you can XYZ scale it just like other objects.
I left this smoke out of the box, as I said, and I would thin it up (using Y) and shrink it's diameter to make it look more realistic, also make it more opague.
I saved the other version (I think) of the pretty smoke before I had to remove most of the color. I'll go see if I've got it and post it once it renders. Enjoy!
EDIT: Toon Ghost 2.0- more versatile than you would first think- if you click on the submenus in the Scene tab for the body parts, then go to Parameters, the bend/twist/side by sides appear. The tail has a lot of sections and options. It's worth buying. $6.95 but 30% off as a PC member (it's a Daz Original) so $4.87 The only thing I wish you could do with it that you can't- is scale down the cheeks. There's no "cheek" option as you know in the Scene submenus.
Spotlights shooting down, spotlights from within (yes, within), spotlights from below the ground shooting up, spotlights shooting from the side. WHEEEEEEE!
Not bad for my first one (and deliberately not changing ANY of the settings or shapes.)
Your turn- if you've used any fog, smoke, etc products similar to this one or this one, and want to share and give any tips, feel free. I may play with the settings on this one now and thin it out, mess with opacity. Please do say which product you used (and if you have time, provide the link.) This is like "special effects" week on the thread, isn't it? First the fog, now the smoke...
I quickly softened the green glow at the bottom- and the leaf- just a tad. I like that the smoke eerily produces a glow at the base.
Poor Casper looked horrible in this- so it had to go. I moved him around and to get this much effect, the ghost looked BAD. So you'll have to determine what you want and move the figure out of the smoke, change your angle, or something. Other folks who have worked with this might have some suggestions, and again, this was all with the smoke at the default opacity.
Well, okay, went into Surfaces and I'm not used to this setup, there's no opacity. So what I did was
ambient strength 49.1%
diffuse color 45.2%
attenuation 2.07
What is attenuation?
And I didn't touch "Follow Blend." Don't know what that is either. It's at 100%
5:30am, going to get some sleep.

It has morphs to enlarge the head pieces, but you'll still have to take time to finagle the hair under "skarf," You can just use a knitted cap under there too.
The set consists of nine headdresses and 21 materials.

AIR CAR JUMPER.
http://www.daz3d.com/air-car-jumper
by Petipet
Aircar is another fun little vehicle by Petipet with a slight toony sort of feel. This little vehicle has lots of options. For example, you can turn the steering wheel, open the door, and fire the jets, as well as raising and lower the wings. It comes in 2 colors, white & orange.
I couldn't find associated poses. (if anyone can find 'em let me know, but usually petipet has them in the content directory with the rest of the files) and I didn't see them in the usual places....
I have two quick renders to show you how it looks and some of the options.
#1 some of the options.
#2. White version in the sky
Air Car Jumper looks good- vibrant colors and as usual attention to detail.
FYI: Someone PM'd me about the hair under the scarf (as some styles are going to be more difficult to get under there)
It was my favorite, Pyrit Hair, which is back on the market. Taylor hair would probably give you the bangs too. You want to look for hairstyles that can be lowered onto the skull, and have shorten bangs options so you can bring those back up.
The person was Sofia. Elegant as usual. Always reminds me of Elizabeth Taylor.

Coming up- The Prop Stop. Looking for a prop? Stop in. Find an unusual prop where people wouldn't think to look for it? Stop in and mention it- but also provide the link. :)
Looking for a prop? Stop in. Aka, the Prop Stop.
Why of COURSE a beach bungalow out in the water has a jacuzzi on the back deck. And The Priority has a gorgeous waterfront AND tunnel. This thread explores hidden (and obvious) props and lists them by subject matter and mini theme. I'm not listing the obvious mega categories, like cars. But what if the car has a pair of gloves laying in the front seat? Or there's a love letter on the dresser?
This list will not be all inclusive- it's meant to give you a few references for the props listed. I'm not living my life around generating a mega list that covers every prop known to mankind.
If you want to contribute to the list, please note the props listed have to be easily available for kit-bashing (taking it out of the scene and used elsewhere.) DON'T GO BY THE IMAGES- THEY NEED TO BE LISTED AS A PROP IN THE PRODUCT PAGE. (For example, the pussy willows may be attached to the ground and not detachable.) Although you can post recommendations/clever ways to use them in the thread discussion, props will only be listed under their intended purpose.
For common items, the list is limited to about ten references. That's enough options for you. I may change them up from time to time. I also will prioritize having a variety of vendors. The latest addition will always be at the end of the list for that item.
You can also submit your own to be integrated into the Prop Stop list. The easiest way to generate a list? Take ONE product, skim it for things you think folks would like to know about. I just listed a scaffold, farm gate, tires from one product. ALL SUGGESTIONS FOR INCLUSION IN THIS LIST NEED THE FULL TITLE OF THE PRODUCT AND THE CLICKABLE LINK. Otherwise, it just stays in the thread discussion. Not all suggestions will be added as it is time permitting. The art studio thread is obviously for a LOT of different purposes and this is just one of them.
I will make a link to the next post on the first page, the very first post.
The Prop Stop
THIS LIST IS COPYRIGHT PROTECTED AND MAY NOT BE REPRODUCED IN PART OR IN ENTIRETY WITHOUT PERMISSION. Listings are not an endorsement of the products, they are for reference use only.
New additions are at the end of each prop's listing.
Some results are by category. (Food and Kitchen are TWO separate areas) If an item is fairly unique (shotgun shells) it will be listed by itself.
LATEST UPDATE: Through post 1416. Thank you Scott-L :)

Probes- Mechanical Mayhem
http://www.daz3d.com/probes-mechanical-mayhem -Davorama
I have to tell you I have long adored this set, and it is quite possibly my favorite robot set. The fluid lines of these little probe robots and the multiple easy pose tentacles are just really great! =-) You can attach 5 different arm attachments including a cool little extruding laser beam to create tone of really nice looks. You can also use a metal shader to recolor the probe to look like you want. In this case I have used a shader made from Bot for Genesis and the metallic shaders DLD High Gloss Metallic Shaders for DS, which also produce some nice variety surfaces for your bots.
The tentacles are easy to pose, as they come with movement morphs they are also easypose (which means simple to pose and move) and lighting up the 'eyes' is a simple matter of a colored pointlight or two.
The only downside to this product is: a: for some reason it has never been converted to DIM.(I put in a work request about that a while ago). b: I have to attach the little tools manually. I can't seem to parent them to the limbs automatically. (If anyone can do this in daz, let me know). c: if you are a daz user, you should know the mats are poser mats, however, I don't really use the gold/silver one where this is mostly obvious. It is easy enough to shade probes with metallic shaders to look however you want.
Still, parenting to the probe arms is easy if you do it in zero'd position, because the ends of the tentacles are designed to have an attachment added. You can even group several attachments drag them down and parent one. Hide it. Adjust and parent the second one. Hide that. And so on. When you want to use a bot with different tentacle attachments you have one- with all the options, just hidden. Of course this works easier on the bot with one tentacle rather than the six tentacled one!
1 render with bot with radar attachment.
2. render of bot with the silvery from bot for genesis shader (made from the figure's skin) instead of the silver one that comes with the second skin. I like the bot for genesis mat more, but left the gold accents alone.
3. This is a pic of probe number 1 with the laser beam attachment, recolored using metallic shaders from the high gloss shader kit and the bot for genesis shader. A red point light at the fire point and on the wall gives the impression of a laser beam. If I had time, sparks, darkening the hole and smoke would be what I'd add in photoshop.
4. Probe number 2 has lots of arms. Attach tools to those if you dare. I'm leaving 'em be. They have a nice squidlike appearance as is.
5. Bot number 3 with laser beam attachment.
Well I hope you enjoy this wonderful daz item. It is one of my favorites. =-)
Where in the heck are you FINDING all this stuff??? I've never noticed those before, and even if I haven't done scifi I would think I wouldn't have missed these. The third one is definitely my favorite, I love the glossy, gleaming metal :) These look really fluid and graceful, like you can imagine them being animated and just zipping and curling around with ease. Thanks for sharing the pose information. I've wishlisted these and it's all your fault! The price is good as it includes all the models. (Hey, I can see the Infiltrator (snake) doing battle with that one with the red glow tail instrument. Wonder who'd win?
