Character Dressing/Undressing (possible hack)

Hi everyone! This isn't a question but it's something that occured to me today. It may have already been figured out and I'm late to the party but it could be a useful concept so here goes!

There have been a few times I've thought that it would add to the realism of a scene to have a character taking off/putting on clothing. You know, like normal people instead of the either it's on or it's off option. But because clothing items don't tend to have poseable bones, it's not very easy. BUT, if it's a must for your render or even a want, try this!

Load a character, apply whatever clothing you want to work with on him/her. Then turn off any relevent limits in the parameters tabe and pose until the clothes look as close as you can make them to what you want. Then, just turn off the character they are loaded to! (see attached) I suppose you could even turn off the character before posing as the tools still recognize the limbs. That way you're focusing just on the clothing item. Up to the user.

It's not a perfect fix and it still requires some work and creative camera angles but if you can get it right, it's a pretty decent end result. I apologize for the rush job on the posing. I was just trying to illustrate the concept. I hope someone finds this useful. I've learned so much here and hope I am giving a little bit back.

:D :D :D

haha, I know! I actually wanted to do a third with the jeans guy yelling at Blue Shirt "NOT COOL MAN!" but I had to take my niece and nephew home so comedy had to wait. I just put the first picture up for reference.

Have you tried selecting just the pants legs and reducing the scale on the Z-axis to flatten them a bit?

Working on something else right now, or I'd try it.

That is actualy something I experimented with a few months ago.  For mine, I did not use an invisible donor figure.  I placed the clothing item where I wanted it, and used it's own posing and scaling controlls to achieve the bellow render.

There was a lot of trial and error...  And posing, and scaling, and moving.  In the end it was worth it, and fairly convincing.

No I didn't. Wouldn't that sort of scaling effect the entire pants though? I don't think there is a way to select just a portion of them unless they were made in pieces.

  • you can just pose the actual clothes too

I have done that even animated

I think applying a deformer to the lower parts of the pants would look better, then scaling on the z-axis.

In the "scene" pane, if there's an arrow next to the item name, right-click on the name and choose "Expand > Expand from selected"
That will show you all of the parts. You can pick one and adjust the dimensions.
