Info on ins and outs of importing Poser files?

edited December 1969 in New Users

Hi all,
So here's the situation:

The best way I learn new software is by going through a 400 page reference manual, page by page by page. I don't do well with learning a program from tuts or intuitively (probably why I like Blender...) So Poser is what I have to work in. This isn't meant as criticism, but I HAVE TO HAVE that long, long ref manual.

This is the question: where to go to find detailed information on exactly what happens when Poser files are imported into DS 4.5? (I've figured out how to do that, anyway!) What comes through? What doesn't? Are there huge differences between 9 and Pro 2010 when it comes to this? (( have 2010 now, but I've been thinking about getting 9 before I get too deeply into the workflow.) What happens when the files are then exported to Bryce? What can and can't be done?

All advice appreciated! :)

All a CR2 file is is a script telling Poser what to load and what to do with it when it's loaded. The OBJ file holds the actual geometry and is accepted fine between the two platforms. The only issue you'll likely get is the materials are very different. While the basic stuff will be applied, such as diffuse, bump and specular mappings, any procedurally generated shaders or other special functions won't be carried forward to Daz Studio because the two use different systems. 3Delight works differently to Firefly, since 3DL uses RSL (Renderman Scripting Language; think Pixar) while Firefly does not. Though my research tells me they're both Renderman compliant.

What this ultimately means for you is that while you might need to work on the material settings to get things right, pretty much everything else should work fine. You should know that Daz originally made Poser models before Daz Studio was released, so DS was designed from the start to be compatible with Poser objects. Though I much prefer the 3Delight engine if only because I can sink my teeth into RSL coding.

Thanks! I appreciate the info. I'll probably learn more about Daz once I've been able to go through Poser some more.... I just get kind of nuts if I can't start out with a ref manual. It has a lot to do with my learning style.
