PRoblems with Iray

Hi guys :)

So, I am trying to get back into Daz after I completely stopped after DS 4 came out because I never warmed up to the program.

Far too complicated and chaotic for me back then and it takes off right where I stopped.

I can't even get to a point where I can do a basic render. I have Aux viewport on, so that helps a little, but at some point I am always stuck with a base model and hair and it will keep going on with "Preparing scene" over and over and I don't know what to do.

Once I close Daz and start up again, it's work normally again for a while, but I am close to tears and feel so stupid because I don't know what I'm doing wrong!

I also have huge problems to get previews to take less than 5 miinutes rendertimes for scenes with nothing but a naked figure in it, even in basic Open GL) and I'm... so helpless.

Please help!

First of, if you are using Iray, it will have long render times in preview and render mode if you are rendering in CPU mode. To render Iray with your graphic card, you need an nVidea Card (best, with a minimum of 4 GB), and have to have installed up to date drivers. Please go to the render tab and check under "advanced", what rendering devices you are offered.

Second, memory and CPU. I don't know what your system specifics are, but a Genesis 2 figure with clothing and hair can quickly get to 2GB memory, so if you have no iray-compatible GPU, and preview mode on, and just 4GB memory... things will not work well.

The "preparing scene" is normal, and it can take several runs, too. Depending on the scene and system specifics you have, it can take from a few seconds to ten minutes.

Here's a suggestion: check out what render devices you have available. Also, check out your system specifics. Let's try to get it working from there.

Also, you don't have to have the Iray preview on the whole time you are setting up the scened.  It can seriously slow things down. I tend to turn it on if I need to check something specific until very close to when I am ready to render.

What are your computers specs - Graphics card, Ram and CPU? Becuase it sounds like you're running out of computer resources which is why a restart often helps.

Iray needs a beefier machine. I've got an old crank opperated box with wooden compenents, but previews only take at most 10-20 seconds to start

  • I got an INtel Core i5-7400 Kabylake 3.00 GHz

    16GB RAM

    GeForce 670

    and am running Win10

I turned GPU rendering on and after several restarts yesterday, it seems to be working for the moment, though the preview still randomly stops previewing, but at least it IS rendering.

The GeForce only has 2GB, so it will only render very basic scenes, i.e. if you have the monitor running through the card as well. Even a character with hair and clothes in a simple environment can make the render quit the card and change to the CPU. I'd also leave the preview off while you pose.

  • Wow, that's far above my specs- and I'm running Iray on the cpu, and like I said, it doesn't take anywhere close to 5 min on mine.

    Alright, thanks ^^

It seems to be working alright now but I've also done barely more than a bit of shaping an posing.

Still trying to get the hang of Daz 4 (which I have been doing since uh... when did it come out? LOL)

Well, back to the basics, I guess.

It works for now. Not sure WHAT was wrong.

@fussel2107    Be sure you turn off anything in the scene you don't need to check- for example, if you are doing a portrait, turn off the hair the first couple of times so you can check the lighting on the face only. (Although some hair will interfere, if the lights are directly overhead.)  I have an Art Studio thread (well, a series of threads since 2012, going on thread 10) and there are a lot of tutorials in it (forum members contribute and are very helpful.)  The index of links is this post, and I would suggest this Iray lighting tutorial I did which will show you a render and tell you EXACTLY how to get those results. It focuses on the Tone Mapping section.  If you remember to use that list of topics, tutorials, and tips, you'll often find what you're looking for.  And don't get overwhelmed- the New User section is a great place to ask questions!
