I already know the answer for using DIM and DIM Studio CF- but for Poser users, if there is the DIM file, DIM Studio CF, (and no Poser CF's) would the Poser users also grab the DIM Studio CF?
I would surmise that Studio companion files are intended for Daz Studio users when downloading Poser content. Usually this is materials specific to Daz Studio for older content which was developed for use in Poser. While Daz Studio can load most of the older content, and even translate some of the material settings, it's rarely a perfect match and surface settings are always best when designed specifically for the platform.
Hello! :) (at 4am)
I went back on the Product Library thread because someone had mentioned, "StudioCF's have material settings to apply to the Poser files to make them look good in DS." so I was guessing the Poser users wouldn't need the Studio CF stuff.
So DIM has both PC and MAC, has the metadata- does DIM differentiate between poser and studio files or is it just listed as DIM?
And I'm wading through my stuff and haven't seen a Poser CF- do they exist? (sorry, I'm tired, it's 4:30am here, but I want to get this straight.)
There are lots of Poser Companion files. They're designed to accompany Daz Studio format products so that they're usable in Poser. If you're using the DIM you might not come across these since it does a lot of the hard work for you. As for your other question, I can't answer that in full as I don't use the download manager to install my content.
It can vary depending how the products are packaged -- some have just a single file with no DS presets, some a single file with the DS presets alongside the Poser presets, some have a separate Companion File which requires the other version, some have independent, stand-alone versions for each. The trend appears to be moving toward:
1) For Poser-format items: a Poser version with no DS files, a DS version for DS4.5 only, and a Legacy version for older versions of DS
2) For Triax DS items: A DSON Core for DS4.5 and DSON-Importer, a PoserCF for DSON-Importer, and sometimes a Legacy version for DS4.0

The DIM is fully customizable and can be configured to to show all the different file types needed for all the supported software.
If you want to see which products has Poser CF files in DIM; click on the DSON importer for Poser in the filters section.
