4K res is costing me 20H to render, will 1080P or 720P turn down render time?

Hi all,
I'm still pretty new to Daz but i'm getting more and more grib on things.
Fanlly got some nice stuff rendering at the moment.
System is a bit laggy though but probbebly due to a fact that im using 2 monitors on the same graphics card (MSI GTX 970) thats rendering in Iray now.
But that not part of my question (but any solutions, are welcome. Probebly something like, use onboard GPU or buy a low cost second graphics card)
Question is:
Im a fan of real sharp and good quality.
So i'm reding in 4K Res. and my rendering times are 20H or more. (after 20H some pics still contain little grain, and we all don't like grain in our pics do we )
Given the fact that im using a GTX 970 (4GB - 1664 Cores) mean it's a bit slow and using outdated non pascal cores i might be pushing the GPU to it's limits?
I'm seeing i'm on the egde where the scene i'm rendering some times wants to use CPU (i7 4970K) instead of GPU.
Does falling back to 1080P rendering or Less 720P improve rendering times? or is it a process that always long every time and doens't matter what kind of Res you choose?
And if it does, how much rendering time will it improve if i render at 1080P / 720P?

Lowering resolution definitely does help. When possible try avoiding translucencies also helps a lot. That's for reducing time.
To decrease memory usage, if possible use HDRI, if you use a scene frequently, create your own HDRI using a camera with spheric lens distortion.

As i said im realy new to the scene...
so as far as translucencies go, uuhhmmmm..... ? please explain? what are those and how to avoid.
HRDI, i've red something about it and there is one HDRI that comes with daz standard right. the Ruins HDRI?
So here is the thing, im using an indoor scene and leaving the seling on, there is a bath tub with water and i don't want to have any outside reflections, so lets say leaving the celing off will let other lights (from sky) come through and relfect on the water (and glossy body).
So what is best pratice here? what would be the Enviorment settings to use with HDRI and how will it effect my curren't light setup?

By translucencies I meant surfaces like Skin, so if you are rendering a skin close up, translucency is a must, otherwise it's unnecessary. But in the case of water is a must all the time.
So, if you don't require translucency, you must adjust the Translucency Weight to 0.
Correct. There are lots of sites with free and paid HDRIs that provide distinct lighting or mood.
Actually what you are doing is what most of user do, hide walls or ceiling to let light in. As for the environment settings just keep intensity value to 1 (Ruins come with a default value of 2) unless you need a stronger environment light. You'll need to adjust the exposure value to adapt to the HDRI lighting.

Oh, in that case there's no point in adding an HDRI image.
If you were to shoot a portrait close up you'd need to keep character presets as default, assuming character comes with iray presets.
Exactly, when zooming out, translucency isn't required unless you want to highlight ears and fingers translucency.
Every scene object (prop or actor) has its own defined surfaces and each surfaces has a property to control translucency, there is no main translucency slider, each surface has its own.
Just wondering: Are you sure you are still rendering on your GPU, and that the system hasn't switched to CPU? I'm asking because your card has 4GB and you are running the monitors on it... and two or three characters in a scene can easily be "too much", depending on settings.
