Just starting out, advice?

edited December 1969 in New Users

I just downloaded the free package of daz studio.

I used poser a LONNNNNNG time ago and I haven't touched it since, so its all new to me.

I'm wanting to make a bunch of concept images of characters from a movie I'm shooting, using 3d models and clothing etc.

The movie is about professional wrestling, so the characters are mostly going to be in wrestling type attire.

Females and males both.

My question is, as a newbie.. what models should I start with, and if I want to stick with freebie stuff for now.. what's the models that are going to be the most compatible with things I'll find?

Also, for some reason when I open the genesis female model.. the shading of the model is gray unless I click on render or animate, it wasn't like this before and its super annoying... how do I change it so i can see the shading on the figure on the props/wardrobe/actor tab?

Genesis is free, and there is a good variety of free Genesis products out there. There are more freebies for Victoria 4.2 (V4) and Michael 4 (M4) (they've been around much longer than Genesis), but fortunately most V4 and M4 things are usable with Genesis (you can use skin textures, clothing will AutoFit--though results vary, and hair, poses, and props can all be used but may take some manual tweaking).

Regarding your issue with the gray Genesis Female...is it happening with everything, or just Genesis? If it's happening with everything, that may be the result of your DrawStyle being set to Smooth Shaded instead of Texture Shaded. Click on the icon that looks like a gray ball (it's at the top of the viewport area, next to the views and cameras dropdown), and select Texture Shaded. Hopefully that will make the texture come back.

If it's only affecting Genesis, are you sure you have applied a texture?

I know you want to use the freebies, but consider Freak for getting the muscle bound types. Although you can get muscular figures using the sliders in Parameters Tab/Actor once you start acquiring figures, Freak has a jump start. (Says I, I haven't used/ installed him yet, but based on the promos, he's pretty ripped!) And you use Auto Fit to get clothes to fit. If you have poke through (based on a lot of muscle) you can go to Scene and select the body part and click the eye ball to hide it. Would love to see your renders when you get going :)
