So i was just wondering how to set the daz 3d background from blue to black, so i can set up my lighting so it looks like she's in the dark when i render an image.
Im a Daz newbie but I think I can help. When you are looking at your render, there is a little icon on top right hand corner, "Display Viewport Options" it has a drop down menu that allows you to change background color. The Icon is 4 small horizontal lines. Hope this helps. If you want to change background image, use Edit>Backdrop and you can browse to a background image you like to use.

You helped precisely right. Way to go! :) And welcome to the forums.

What you're looking for is called ambient lighting. If you want actual beams it's called volumetric lighting. I don't use DS so I can't give directions, but you can do a search for those terms.
I also highly recommend following Novica's thread - the Art Studio link in her sig above - there's a ton of useful information for us newbies gathered there.
Why thank you Sisca! :) Glad folks are using it. And feel free to post over there if you find a good tutorial or link with useful information- I'm trying to get it all in one spot, but when I'm busy with the video tutorials, I don't get to surf the forums and things get buried.
Ok, so this is what im going for, any tips on lighting is welcome. Just wish i could turn the headlights on!! lol
I'm sure the lighting pros will come along and tell you how, I did see a video from daz on YouTube about lighting a torch- it would be the same thing. Maybe a linear point light?
What kind of feel are you going for with the scene. Daytime, evening, night etc.. Light can be hard to get down right so you need a basic mood you are wanting to get across to users
Okay, let me post the photo then I'll edit with the explanation.
EDIT: Don't you laugh at my toon car! Not as sleek as your vehicle, but I love it anyway.
So, I used a point light. First photo on left: Go to TOP VIEW to place lights such as sirens, it really helps.
Then perspective view (second photo, on right.)
Bottom left: this is what it looks like before rendering. I went in to Parameters/Light and made the light blue, intensity 150%
(When choosing headlights- don't go with just white, have a bluish white IMO)
Bottom right: ta dah, siren glows.
This should work with headlights, at least to get them lit. Might try a linear point light to get beams. you can also raise this light so the glow is off the vehicle and more in the air. I just did it quickly without adjustments. Again, a pro needs to jump in and help. :)
EDIT: I see you have one! Also, for brand new folks, to create a new light, go to top left and choose "Create>New (Whatever)"

Ok, again I am by far a Daz guru or anything remotely close. I just wanted to share with you my experience. I found that I learned so much about lighting by just boiling a kettle, making tea and sitting down at me PC and I rezzed a sphere and placed in on top of a plane. Go to the Surface/Rendering tab and play around with the different settings for the surfaces of each object, render it and see what does what. I found that a simple plane with Diffuse color set to black and Reflection color set to White, Reflection Strength set to 100% will produce a reflection of an object that is near it, alot like a glossy black marble floor would. A spotlight of some kind of overhead lighting is required as well to create the reflection. Like I say, just play around with simple objects and you will learn so much along your journey. Cheers!
That doesn't create a BEAM of light does it? Coming from the headlights? It's not ambient light that's needed (if I am using the right term, meaning an all around glow without a specific source strongly identified) Getting that glow sounds neat, but the headlights would be shining forward- I tried a spotlight placed inside the headlight, pointing out. No beam of light when spot rendered. I couldn't find the torch thing on YouTube either, I've been looking. But even that doesn't produce beams, they pretty much did what I did with the point light. (siren) If you only want the headlights to glow, go that route. If you want beams, I haven't been successful testing a spotlight. Gotta run work on some other things but I'll be interested to see how this is solved. (And add it to my studio thread so others can find it.) :)
Found in a forum post from May, for beams of light this will work. (Don't ask me.) But when I googled, that is what came up.

Only Volumetric shaders such as Uber Volume can cause that effect, or a Camera built in Shader Maker, Or bought. Basic lights of any type can not produce the Beam effect in a Daz Studio Render.
All good thoughts, im going to try and see what each does, and Frank0314 im kinda going for night time , dark mood, only a little light to reflect off car onto Kiyomi. But that could change later on. Thanks all of you for The ideas, gives me alot to try and play with.

A good tutorial on lighting using the UberEnvironment lights from AdamR - http://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/5320/
