Eyes Eyes Eyes and why they are the make or break feature

I have only seen a few eyes that really seem real. It's as if the entire theme has me loving it until I see a set of " flat" looking eyes. How can we get around this? I would love to hear and see examples of the best eyes out there in our 3d worlds.

Try setting the base iris color to something other than white in addition to the diffuse map.

Also, train the eyes in a direction other than straight ahead. Eyes fixed straight forward are a dead (pun-intended) giveaway.

Have several cameras in the scene and in the parameters set the eyes to point to the inactive camera or some other object that is not straight in front of the subject's face.

This image by VincentXyooj is pretty well done, I think. The fact that the eyes are fixed slightly below the viewer's gaze conveys emotion, tiredness and weight or introspection.
