upper and lower body poses

I'm sure there is a way to do this but I have not uncovered it. I have a number of custom characters and I often save poses. But I want to mix lower body poses with upper poses without changing the characters entire pose set. Can someone share an easy way to isolate specifically the lower or upper body (or any other body part/group for that matter)?

Two options:

When saving a pose, in the dialogue box that asks for the name click the Select Subset button and use the tree that pops up to select the body parts you want to include.

When applying a pose, lock the body parts you want to remain unchanged (Object>Lock Object).

The former is easier, or at least quicker, than the latter but of course has to be planned in advance.
