Symmetry unpredictable with displacement brushes

So I am new to hexagon. I have managed to import a Genesis 8 base and morph the figure sucessfully. Intially adding detail with a displacment brush and exporting the maps was also going well. My problem started when adding bumps to knuckles tendons and viens to the hands. Sometimes it worked sometimes it didn't. I might work on the right hand and see no effect from the brushes only to find double the effect on the left hand but I could not predict when this was going to happen. Am I hitting a button that's turning one half off or locking something by accident?

Check that clone is toggled on for Symmetry, and that there is no DG? I don't use any brushes in Hexagon. So don't really know.
