Shadow Template / Cookie / Gobo

I want to create a Gobo, that is a plane through which I shine a light so that it casts shadows on the scene. I'm fiddling around with various black-n-white pictures applied to primitive planes, but I'm not getting any shadows.

Since I assume you guys already know how to do this, could you give me a pointer? Thank you!

Duh, I solved the problem - the gobo was too grayish. By using something with a stark b/w contrast, it works just fine.
