Carrara Challenge 41: The Super, Legendary, Epic Voting Results!
The Super, Legendary, Epic Voting Thread Polls Are Closed!
Summer is here (at least in the northern hemisphere)! It is now summer blockbuster movie season. Along with the blockbusters comes the hyperbole and many breathless adjectives and adverbs!
The artist's goal is to create an image, or images depicting any of the three adjectives used in the challenge title: Super, legendary, or epic. Super could be as literal as a super hero, or a depiction of someone, something, or a profession that is super to you. Legendary could be a legendary or mythic figure, place or event; even if the figure, place or event is real, it is possible to take on a legendary status, such as the invasion of Normandy or the first man on the moon. Epic could mean a scene or event epic in scale, or zoomed in on a moment in an epic event or scene, thus establishing a more intimate connection to the world surrounding the epic scene or event. An epic event or scene could be grounded in reality (present or past), be sci-fi or fantasy based, or something else entirely. There was no requirement for the artist to pick a specifiv catergory- It could be anything.
Artists were required to use Carrara to set up their scene and render it in Carrara unless they used a third party plugin to render the scene, such as Octane, etc. Postwork was allowed. Artists were also required to use either a metaball object or Carrara's dynamic hair in the scene. If they wished to use both they could, but it was optional. Metaball objects once created, could be converted to vertex models if needed.
Extra special thanks to DAZ 3D and Naomi for sponsoring this challenge!

The WIP thread can be found here: https://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/262106/carrara-challenge-41-the-super-legendary-epic-render-challenge
I highly suggest you check out the WIPs. Many of the techniques for using hair and metaballs are unique to Carrara; however, things like lighting, framing, composition, etc. can be very universal. There are many talented people that enter these. There is a lot to learn. Do not hesitate to ask how and why something was done!

Title: Mentallis
Artist: UnifiedBrain
WIP Links: https://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/comment/3760111/#Comment_3760111
Products Used: M3, Predatron M3 facial morphs, M4 Elite Body Suit
Additional Notes: Background fire was a tiny frame capture made from an old effects program, made better by loading it in Carrara and applying Dream Smoothing in the GMIC plugin. Skin was altered by the Sparrowhawke Edge Falloff plugin. Suit shader made from Daz Supersuit texture. Metaballs were used to make the "Kirby Crackle."

Title: Captain Sunburn and Tomato Boy, Splitting Hairs

https://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/comment/3781126/#Comment_3781126
Challenge Requirements: Used hair in non-traditional way. I grew hair on the sides of the walls. I kept the hairs straight. In the hair modeler, I lengthened the hairs to 2.5 feet and increased the scale of the hairs. In the hair shader, I set root thickness to 100% and tip thickness to 1% to get the spikes.
Products Used: The head of Tomato Boy is a morph of the Carrara freebie given away as part of Carrara Challenge 33 by GK Dantas. All other figures and props modeled, textured, and rigged in Carrara. However, some were modeled for prior challenges. Captain Sunburn is a morph of my Brash Lonergan figure. Tomato boy's body is from a figure I made for the Carrara game challenge.
Notes - Used multpass rendering, a GMIC filter (comix color), and the Carrara native Toon Pro III filter (although toon effects reduced). The spikes are the hairs resulting from the volumetric primitive multipass. The depth pass and the post effect past were used to adjust colors. Text and compositing added in PSE.

Title: Georgio
Link to WIP(s): https://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/comment/3788306/#Comment_3788306
Challenge Requirements: Used metaballs to create the balloons, used Carrara hair on Alf the Alien Life Form and Georgio's facial and head hair. Modelled Alf in the modelling room.
Products/Content: Modelled Alf, used Genesis and used morphs to get the Georgio look. Carrara is yet to support Genesis 3 or 8 so limited to G and G2 for images.
Notes: Ancient Carrara theorists suggest that ancient software mentioned in these sacred texts are in fact extraterrestrial beings with highly advanced technologies who were misinterpreted as “Gods” by ancient modellers.
.
I am enjoying seeing the different interpretations people come up with. Keep them coming folks!

Title: New Super Hero
Challenge Requirements: Used dynamic hair for the speedlines and metaballs particles spraying out from the Super Hero
Products/Content: M4 thrice. Daz Mc Suit. Stonemason City.
Notes: I used explosion modifier on the suit. I placed hairs on a vertiacl plane to make the speedlines - then made the plane invisable.
I used Fenrics tree duplicator to duplicate M4 and hit him with an explosion modifier to get thsoe sharp fragments.
M4 himself is the object source for the metaball partcle emitter. I tried getting them to sprout behind him but they insisted on falling downwards - oh well.
Postwork - this render is a combo of shadow pass, toonpro pass, depth pass, diffuese pass and voulmetric primitif pass

Title: Jack In Box
Challenge Requirements: Used dynamic hair for the sharpbits and metaballs coating the spring
Products/Content: Spring from objects folder.
I 'modelled' the rest of the stuff. The key and the hands using Philemenos cutout plugin- thank you so much for that! I painted the face in Carrara's paint room
Postwork - this render is a combo of Toon Pro and Wireframe plugi in's from Eric Winemiller, shadow pass, diffuese pass and voulmetric primitif pass

All the stuff made in Carrara. Metaballs are the ground and the trunks. Carrara's hair was used on trees instead of leafs. Procedural shaders were used on all the objects in the scene. Carrara native render, no postwork.

WIP: https://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/comment/3794456/#Comment_3794456
The ground was modeled with metaballs, flames on the lava rivers was created with hair, then converted to mesh with Philemo plugin.
Dancing character is System 46 for Genesis 3 Female. I used Bunyip's method to import this character to Carrara on Janette figure.
Carrara native render, no postwork.

I used metaballs to model the pie. Then metaball object was converted to vertex object and untriangulated in vertex room. Every object in the scene was modeled and textured in Carrara. Rendered with Carrara Octane plugin. No postwork.

Title: Super Villainous Volcanic Lair
WIP Post - https://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/comment/3826776/#Comment_3826776
Challenge Requirements: Hair used in unusual way. The smoke from the top of the volcano and from the burning buildings is Carrara dynamic hair. I used a vertex object to grow the hair and then placed the object (invisible) where I waned the smoke to start. I brushed the hair for the path of the smoke. I used Phlemo's plugin to convert the hair to an obect. I applied a blur modifier to the converted hair to make it look sort of like smoke.
Products/Content: Everything created in Carrara.

Title: Chickenzilla the Legendary Pinup
WIP post - https://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/comment/3818806/#Comment_3818806
Challenge Requirements: Metaball object. I used the metaball modeler to create Chickenzilla. I rigged the creature with carrara's bones, which converted it to a vertex object. I then posed her in this classic pinup pose. Very sexy!
Products/Content: Chickenzilla was created in Carrara.
Title Chickenzilla
Very creative, everyone. And the WIP thread has additional cool stuff. These are in order submitted, not necessarily my ranking - but it could be my ranking. Hope that was confusing.
