"Illustration and Inspiration"
This month’s contest is about creating a render based on a quotation, saying, or passage that inspires you
In this month's contest, your task is to create an illustration of a short piece of poetry or prose of your choice. Illustration as a discipline is defined by its context. While an illustration can often stand alone as a work of art in its own right, it is best viewed as a visual representation or elucidation of the associated text. Some illustrations also function as embellishments or interpretations of a text -- so there's plenty of room for creativity or originality. When working on your images, please keep in mind the context of the quote you have chosen, including subject matter, mood/emotion, theme, and symbolism.
Intent: To use the principles you have learned (lighting, composition, posing, expression, etc.) to effectively capture the essence of the quote you have chosen.
Choose a bit of poetry or a song lyric, a line of dialog from a favorite movie or book, a passage from an inspirational text, or a traditional or contemporary expression or saying on which to base your render. Please include this quotation along with your image (and cite the source, if possible). This is the WIP (work in progress) thread; please post your final entries in the Entries Thread.
A few possible sources of quotes:
Wikiquote
Goodreads | Popular Quotes
The Phrase Finder
Internet Sacred Text Archive
Omniglot - Idioms and sayings in various languages
The Poetry Foundation
I will be checking in on the WIP THREAD as will the rest of the Community Volunteers to try and help with anything you all may need, or to give you any hints and tips you can use..
For a list of the current contest rules, please see this thread :Contest Rules

Comments
This is one I did some time ago to illustrate the principle.
A short poem by a very old Welsh poet.
Gorddyar adar;gwlyth traeth;
Eghurnwyfre;ehalaeth
Ton. Gwyw calon rhag hiraeth.
or
A bright sky,seabirds mewling;
A wide wave, soaking the shore:
A heart, withering from hiraedd.
Hiraedd, a peculiar celtic term, for which there is no real english translation, melancholia, but not quite, a sad introspective mood.
Thanks for that beautiful example, chohole!

Very nice idea for this month contest!
And very nice practical example from Chohole!
May we also get a 'quote' from song lyrics? *fluttering eyelashes while assuming a kitten big eyes look*
Another fave one fo me, I have several renders based on Song lyrics,
And actually those are just examples...if you have a snippet of text you'd like to use that doesn't fall into any of the above categories, but still seems to fit the theme of the contest, feel free to use it (or ask if you're not sure whether it's appropriate). Just make sure the render is based on the text, not the other way around...this isn't a caption contest.
I really like this month theme I must admit, not sure if it is allright to post a image that is NOT an entry (since I also plan to take part of the ocntest, though with another image of course)? It's an image I made a while ago, to a weekly.. inspired by one of my old time favourite songs Dance of Love.
Yes we like to see images, as long as you mark it NAE
Here it is than :) the first time I actually submit a NAE picture *smiles* This is a picture I plan to go back to and revisit, now that I have learnt a few more things since I did it
Dance of Love
Inspired by the beautiful song by Dan Hill called Dance of Love ( youtube - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mkRzj7t3Ehw )
Lyrics
The music plays so soft and sweet
My hands they shake when our lips meet
All that I ask is that tonight
We have this dance of love
Your eyes, they shine like stars above
This is the night that I've been dreaming of
It's your favorite song
Girl, can we hold on in this dance of love
Something comes over me when you are near
So close and yet so far
I could die here in your arms
As we hold on in this dance of love
The music plays, you're all I see
I feel you breathing so close to me
Take my hand, tonight I'll be your man
In this dance of love
Something comes over me I can't explain
Girl, when I'm holding you
The world just slips away
As we hold on in this dance of love
And all I ask is that we have this dance
The music plays, we close our eyes
So soft, it flows into the night
You're like a prayer
Nothing else compares in this dance of love
You know I want you, take my hand
And I will be your man in this dance of love
I agree. I've been looking up inspirational quotes all morning trying to figure out what I might want to try.
Lovely image. Very inspirational. Thank you for sharing.
I agree. I've been looking up inspirational quotes all morning trying to figure out what I might want to try. :roll:don't force it, let it come naturally. :)
I will. I need to let my subconscious work on it for a while.
Thanks Szark.
Oooh, now that's a nice theme! Let's see what the muse comes up with.
My muse is a pony. Don't laugh.
I approve this thread and want to look at all the renders. (Of which this post ensures I will be notified.)
Oooo this theme is interesting! I missed the July contest, but I'm going to be head on with this month's! *Waiting patiently on Luxus* Been 11 hours >.>
That's an interesting theme! I got several ideas actually. Let me try a first render, though I have other interpretations in mind for this quote, too.
Mastering others is strength. Mastering yourself is true power.
Lao Tzu
The image is still rendering, but here what I have so far.
"If you want to be a hero, you need to have Dreams, and Honor." -Angeal Final Fantasy 7 Crisis Core
I guess it shows I have a spare evening :)
This one would be:
"Not the wind, not the flag; mind is moving."
The Gateless Gate
(The full text of the koan is on wikisource. I find the whole Gateless Gate - the koan collection this one is quoted from - pretty impressive).
I love this idea, narrowing down which things to use is going to be the hard part!
First go, my favorite e e cummings poem.
somewhere i have never traveled, gladly beyond
any experience, your eyes have their silence:
in your most frail gesture are things which enclose me,
or which i cannot touch because they are too near
your slightest look easily will unclose me
though i have closed myself as fingers,
you open always petal by petal myself as Spring opens
(touching skillfully, mysteriously)her first rose
or if your wish be to close me, i and
my life will shut very beautifully ,suddenly,
as when the heart of this flower imagines
the snow carefully everywhere descending;
nothing which we are to perceive in this world equals
the power of your intense fragility: whose texture
compels me with the color of its countries,
rendering death and forever with each breathing
(i do not know what it is about you that closes
and opens; only something in me understands
the voice of your eyes is deeper than all roses)
nobody, not even the rain, has such small hands
I'm in love with the theme but I'm a bit on the Dark side so... I might do a NAE of this little bit here.
"Oh, look at my face, My name is might have been, My name is never was, My name's forgotten" Hole - Celebrity Skin.
Then again I might not, climbing into my head can get very dangerous sometimes....
The song that I chose for my render was 'Shine Your Light' by Robbie Robertson. Make note of the bold lyrics.
The cry of the city like a siren's song
Wailing over the rooftops the whole night long
Saw a shooting star like a diamond in the sky
Must be someone's soul passing by
These are the streets
Where we used to run where your Papa's from
These are the days
Where you become what you become
These are the streets
Where the story's told
The truth unfolds
Darkness settles in
Shine your light down on me
Lift me up so I can see
Shine your light when you're gone
Give me the strength
To carry on, carry on
Don't wanna be a hero
Just an everyday man
Trying to do the job the very best he can
But now it's like living on borrowed time
Out on the rim, over the line
Always tempting fate like a game of chance
Never wanna stick around to the very last dance
Sometimes I stumble and take a hard fall
Lose hold your grip off the wall
Shine your light down on me
Lift me up so I can see
Shine your light when you're gone
Give me the strength to carry on
Carry on
I thought I saw him walking by the side of the road
Maybe trying to find his way home
He's here but not here
He's gone but not gone
Just hope he knows if I get lost
Shine your light down on me
Lift me up so I can see
Shine your light when you're gone
Give me the strength to carry on
Carry on
Those where the ones to inspire me. I would like to note that this render is also a tribute to my late father whose 59th birthday would have been this month.
I love Tolkien. I may have to revisit some of my favorite passages to find one that I wish to use.
JRRT might be difficult - he didn't produce that many short, to the point, quotable text. Of course, most of the longer songs or poems could be illustrated with an elf staring wistfully into the distance, I guess :)
(love Tolkien, despise Elves)
I softened the light a bit, corrected the finger pose, and fit the top better to get rid of that black spot.
What do you think?
I think the contest has barley started and already the judges are going to have a tough time picking their winners. ;-)

Quite honestly with all the song lyrics posted so far, I'm not that worried about short quotes. ;-) BTW, It wouldn't be an entry as I consider myself a knowledgeable Carrara user. It would just be for fun.
It's funny, this contest has got me thinking about doing another render on this theme, just for fun, as well.
I personally have a trouble deciding which of all songs to go for... or if I should go for one of my own poems *hmm decisions.. decisions*
title: hail to the king, baby.
wip ss. will add zombies and shiz later.
And here I was hoping for an Evil Dead/Army of Darkness picture! Still looks like it could be a fun one.
