"Illustration and Inspiration"
This month’s contest is about creating a render based on a quotation, saying, or passage that inspires you
In this month's contest, your task is to create an illustration of a short piece of poetry or prose of your choice. Illustration as a discipline is defined by its context. While an illustration can often stand alone as a work of art in its own right, it is best viewed as a visual representation or elucidation of the associated text. Some illustrations also function as embellishments or interpretations of a text -- so there's plenty of room for creativity or originality. When working on your images, please keep in mind the context of the quote you have chosen, including subject matter, mood/emotion, theme, and symbolism.
Intent: To use the principles you have learned (lighting, composition, posing, expression, etc.) to effectively capture the essence of the quote you have chosen.
Choose a bit of poetry or a song lyric, a line of dialog from a favorite movie or book, a passage from an inspirational text, or a traditional or contemporary expression or saying on which to base your render. Please include this quotation along with your image (and cite the source, if possible).
A few possible sources of quotes:
Wikiquote
Goodreads | Popular Quotes
The Phrase Finder
Internet Sacred Text Archive
Omniglot - Idioms and sayings in various languages
The Poetry Foundation
I will be checking in on the WIP THREAD as will the rest of the Community Volunteers to try and help with anything you all may need, or to give you any hints and tips you can use..
For a list of the current contest rules, please see this thread :Contest Rules
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________
When working on your submissions, if you would like to get feedback as you work or before posting your final image, please post your image to the WIP THREAD. People will be popping in to the WIP THREAD to give you some critique and advice on your entry and help along the way. Please keep all comments on entries etc to the WIP THREAD as well because comments or requests for help/feedback/advice will be removed from the contest thread and merged into the WIP THREAD. This thread is only for posting final contest submissions.
For those veterans of the forums that would like to help, because this contest is designed for the beginner to learn from, we will be randomly selecting posts offering helpful tips and/or critiques to receive a special voucher as well so whether you are a seasoned artist or an aspiring one, there is fun for everyone!
Closing Date: August 31st, 2013

Weird Fishes (Radiohead)
In the deepest ocean
The bottom of the sea
Your eyes
They turn me
Why should I stay here?
Why should I stay?
I'd be crazy not to follow
Follow where you lead
Your eyes
They turn me
Turn me on to phantoms
I follow to the edge of the earth
And fall off
Everybody leaves
If they get the chance
And this is my chance
I get eaten by the worms
And weird fishes
Picked over by the worms
And weird fishes
Weird fishes
Weird fishes
Yeah I
I'll hit the bottom
Hit the bottom and escape
Escape
And I
I'll hit the bottom
Hit the bottom
Hit the bottom and escape
Escape

Hello to the forum and this august contest,
This is my first posting here, although I have enjoyed using DAZ3D (along with Carrara) for several years now.
I am a multimedia specialist living in NYC and my first entry will deal with the novel "The Scarlet Letter" by Nathaniel Hawthorne.
I was inspired by the novel to compose music (my main background is music composition/performance) for certain parts of it.
It is set in puritanical New England, and the leading character is named Hester Prynne.
Later I started to create some cover art for the music score in DAZ3D 4.012.
Here is some text from the novel (pg. 58 Scholastic edition) that directly relates to the composition posted:
The novel is quite dark (in tone and scenery) so I wanted to capture this night scene as it might appear in Hester's own home with fireplace and candles. The scarlet color is essential for many symbolic reasons, hence the thick red tonal spectrum. She is looking at her beloved daughter Pearl, not shown here.
Later this month I will post a second second entry here, and thanks to all the technical and creative crew at DAZ3D for a product that is quite enjoyable to use and yields professional results. Also thanks to the creator of Studio Light PRO for all his great rigs.
Gregg Di Lorenzo
My second entry is just a revised version of the first, keeping both as finals though:
Title "Weird fishes - deep remix"
I changed the lights, added DOF and limited postwork to resizing only.

somewhere i have never traveled, gladly beyond
by E. E. Cummings
somewhere i have never traveled, gladly beyond
any experience, your eyes have their silence:
in your most frail gesture are things which enclose me,
or which i cannot touch because they are too near
your slightest look easily will unclose me
though i have closed myself as fingers,
you open always petal by petal myself as Spring opens
(touching skillfully, mysteriously)her first rose
or if your wish be to close me, i and
my life will shut very beautifully ,suddenly,
as when the heart of this flower imagines
the snow carefully everywhere descending;
nothing which we are to perceive in this world equals
the power of your intense fragility: whose texture
compels me with the color of its countries,
rendering death and forever with each breathing
(i do not know what it is about you that closes
and opens; only something in me understands
the voice of your eyes is deeper than all roses)
nobody, not even the rain, has such small hands

Title: Yesterday
by: The Beatles
Program: DAZ 4.6 Pro
Yesterday,
All my troubles seemed so far away,
Now it looks as though they're here to stay,
Oh, I believe in yesterday.
Suddenly,
I'm not half the man I used to be,
There's a shadow hanging over me,
Oh, yesterday came suddenly.
Why she
Had to go I don't know, she wouldn't say.
I said,
Something wrong, now I long for yesterday.
Yesterday,
Love was such an easy game to play,
Now I need a place to hide away,
Oh, I believe in yesterday.
Why she
Had to go I don't know, she wouldn't say.
I said,
Something wrong, now I long for yesterday.
Yesterday,
Love was such an easy game to play,
Now I need a place to hide away,
Oh, I believe in yesterday.
Mm-mm-mm-mm-mm-mm-mm.
Title: Apple for the Night
"What a healthy out-of-door appetite it takes to relish the apple of life, the apple of the world, then!"
Henry David Thoreau, Wild Apples

Daz Studio 4.6 - no postwork.
This is my first time entering my work in a contest, so be gentle.
This image was inspired by the song Lola by the Kinks, and Blade Runner.
I met her in a club down in old Soho
Where you drink champagne and it tastes just like cherry-cola
C-o-l-a cola
She walked up to me and she asked me to dance
I asked her her name and in a dark brown voice she said Lola
L-o-l-a Lola lo-lo-lo-lo Lola
Well I'm not the worlds most physical guy
But when she squeezed me tight she nearly broke my spine
Oh my Lola lo-lo-lo-lo Lola
Well I'm not dumb but I can't understand
Why she walked like a woman and talked like a man
Oh my Lola lo-lo-lo-lo Lola lo-lo-lo-lo Lola
Well we drank champagne and danced all night
Under electric candlelight
She picked me up and sat me on her knee
And said dear boy wont you come home with me
Well I'm not the worlds most passionate guy
But when I looked in her eyes well I almost fell for my Lola
Lo-lo-lo-lo Lola lo-lo-lo-lo Lola
Lola lo-lo-lo-lo Lola lo-lo-lo-lo Lola
I pushed her away
I walked to the door
I fell to the floor
I got down on my knees
Then I looked at her and she at me
Well that's the way that I want it to stay
And I always want it to be that way for my Lola
Lo-lo-lo-lo Lola
Girls will be boys and boys will be girls
It's a mixed up muddled up shook up world except for Lola
Lo-lo-lo-lo Lola
Well I left home just a week before
And I'd never ever kissed a woman before
But Lola smiled and took me by the hand
And said dear boy I'm gonna make you a man
Well I'm not the worlds most masculine man
But I know what I am and I'm glad I'm a man
And so is Lola
Lo-lo-lo-lo Lola lo-lo-lo-lo Lola
Lola lo-lo-lo-lo Lola lo-lo-lo-lo Lola

Hello to the forum,
Here is my second entry for this contest.
And another from a cover art production for one of my compositions.
The subject matter is ii Samuel 22, from the old testament.
This art is a center section from the larger piece.
the quotes, first one more negative from the start -
Here is the image, made in DAZ3D with Studio Light PRO rigs.
"to be, or not to be...." (Hamlet, but everyone will know this..).
This was my first try with the "Skies of economy" package. Ad a little fog in photoshop.
The song that gave birth to my inspiration for these renders are Against All Odds by Phil Collins (that is also the title of the render)
How can I just let you walk away,
Just let you leave without a trace?
When I stand here taking every breath with you, ooh ooh
You're the only one who really knew me at all
How can you just walk away from me
When all I can do is watch you leave?
'Cause we've shared the laughter and the pain
And even shared the tears
You're the only one who really knew me at all
So take a look at me now
Well there's just an empty space
And there's nothing left here to remind me
Just the memory of your face
Ooh, Take a look at me now
Well there's just an empty space
And you coming back to me is against the odds
And that's what I've got to face,
I wish I could just make you turn around
Turn around and see me cry
There's so much I need to say to you
So many reasons why
You're the only one who really knew me at all
So take a look at me now
Well there's just an empty space
And there's nothing left here to remind me
Just the memory of your face
Now Take a look at me now
'Cause that's just an empty space
But to wait for you is all I can do
And that's what I've got to face
Take a good look at me now
'Cause I'll still be standing here
And you coming back to me is against all odds
It's the chance I've got to take
Take a look at me now
"Beauty is in the eye of the beholder" is maybe a little 'cliche' but that's what pops up in my mind when it goes about art.
Not calling mine 'Art', 'cause i would need another life to properly study about it, but that's what pops ;o]
