The little tick and cross beside the Character's name in the scene

Sometimes accidentally I clicked on the little tick beside my character's name, the tick turns into a cross.  But I don't see any difference happened to my character.  So what does this tick and cross do?

It's no longer selectable in the viewport if you see a cross.

It's helpful when there are a lot of objects (for example dense concentrations of plants) in your scene and you're having issues clicking on the items you really want to select.

Absolutely!  If you are trying to pose a character and your mouse highlights the floor, walls, doors and whatever else is in the room, change the check mark to an x, and these things no longer highlight.  You can still select them in the scene tab, and change the x back to a checkmark if you need to select it in the scene itself.

    Very handy.
