Render Direct to File

If I'm running a render and have it set to save directly to a file instead of a new window, what happens if I cancel the render? Is the image saved at the point of cancellation? And is there a way to resume the render?

Easiest way to check is to try it. Start a render and cancel it part way through.

You can stop the render at any time - the small control window for the render show up which as the cancel option.

The render is saved when you hit cancel, I think at the point of cancellation, but it also can be at the point of the last "write to canvas", I'm not sure about that.

    You can't restart/resume it.

Thank you both! It was my first time using that feature and I posted this question when I was 19+ hours into the render and around 74% completion. Wanted to know what was wrong, and use my computer for something else, but I didn't want to waste all that work. It finished this morning (1 day, 7 hours+), but I'll keep that in mind next time I try it.

What you can do is to check the Render Temp folder. The rendered image should be stored there whenever "save to canvas" takes place, with default settings that would be about every 30 or so iterations. If you check the temporary image, you can see if it already suits your purpose in quality. Depending on what is in your scene, it often is not neccessary to render until "it's finished"; those are deliberate values, anyway.
