How to make the objects darker

Hi to everyone,

I rendered a scene (this is just the first step), but the first thing which come to my eyes are the sacks/bags.

They are really bright. At the moment there isn't any additiona lights in the scene. Just the default one created by Daz.

What is the best way to make them darker? Maybe change the material? Change some parameters? Please help me.

Take a look to the following screenshot.

Thanks for your time!

Bye,

Ennio

Are you rendering in 3Delight or Iray? Is the surface material for the render engine you are using? (This looks like a 3DL render without shadows activated?)

  • Sorry I forgot to tell. Yes is 3Delight.

I will take a look to the shadow's options. I will tell you

    Thanks,

The way to darken the surface of an object is pretty similar in Iray or 3Delight.

On your surfaces tab, look for Base Color in Iray or Diffuse Color in 3Delight.  Double click in the color area to open the color picker.  You can darken it by dragging the slider or choose a new color.  Keep in mind that this will add color/darkness to the existing maps so you will have a blend.

  • That should be an idea. I need to find a way to automate the process for all the objects.

    I will work on that

    Thanks!

The question is, why do those items look so bright in  the first place, because they shouldn't.

    The set is https://www.daz3d.com/marrakesh-souks-2012

But what set is the stands and fruits from?

    EDIT: Ah, found it -

That set comes with Iray and 3DL materials, and probably on default loads the Iray materials.

Caution ...  before you work on making specific objects lighter / darker, get your scene lighting setup first. You will be amazed at how having natural looking shadows and such will change how your objects look. Since this is 3Delight, it could be that those objects have some color in the "Ambient" channel which makes them appear lighter no matter what lighting you have. Add some lights to the scene and see if the rest of your materials don't lighten up and bring everything else in better balance.

Oky... I've ched the surfaces, and indeed, the 3DL surface has ambient colour.

Left side is the Iray version, right side is the 3DL version. I thought it would be good to see the actual comparision between both surfaces.

This is the no extra light render. As you can see, the 3DL versions stick out a bit, their colours more vibrant.

Now, below is the version where I used AOA lights (ambient and distant), and this looks much less out of place:

And here's the scene with Iray shaders on the building - as you can see, the iray sacks render pretty much the same colour as they do in 3Delight with proper light, as when rendered in iray, so it is safe to assume that this is what the PA had in mind.

But you could just remove the ambient from every surface if you don't want to add lights to your scene.

Here's the sacks in 3DL on the right side with ambient turned down to 0%. If you want them a bit lighter, you could leave ambient on in the surface tab anywhere between 0 and 100%.

  • Thanks BeeMKay for the great explanation :-)

I guess the name of the parameter (which I have to change) is "Ambient Stenght".

I have the last question: how did u change the "parameters" of all the 3D objects? Step by step?

Or is there a better way? I tried "Consolidate Properties" and "Display separate Items" but is working only for the "Parameters" tab, not the "Surface".

    Cheers!

Yes, that would be "ambient Strength", sorry.

I selected first all the sacks in the parameter tab. Then, I went to the surface tab, and selected all of the surfaces for each of the sacks. Then, I scrolled to the ambient strength and changed that. When you have all surfaces selected, you don't have to change them separately, but can make the change for all.
