Using an external Passport drive to run Daz3ds from

in New Users
Hi,
I was thinking about moving Daz3ds from my internal SSD to an external Passport drive. I'm curious as to how this might affect performance when i am doing stuff in Daz3ds. I dont render and posters or animations in Daz at all. What i do is if i see a product i like i'll buy it and install it. Then from there i will fit the clothes onto a figure that i like using morph kits or whatever they are called. Then i will export it to an FBX (sometimes OBJ) and then do a few more minor tweaks on the outfit in Blender. And then i'll render my posters or animations in Blender. Right now all i'm doing are clothes but i might do a few map scenes and export those out so i can work on them in Blender.

The things (figures, clothes, scenes, etc) will open slower since SSD's are faster.
What about performance with the preview window? like when i change a body shape and the clothing mesh changes and the preview window has to re-render it all.
I don't think the preview window will be affected. It dosen't read or writes anything to the harddrive if you change something there.
If you render in iray though or the iray preview mode, it will take a bit longer to write to the VRAM of the GPU so it takes longer to start the render.
It also depends on the computer you're using of course. I have an Alienware51 and have my studio and products on the WD Easystore 8TB external and my studio has very little lag. Didn't see a difference from when it wasn't the external.
