How do I apply a texture?

So, I downloaded this dress, that comes with several textures. In the content folder, I found what is called the Uvlayout, that I can apply to the figure. But now how do I apply one of the textures? I read that it should be done in the "surface" panel of the dress, but I failed to find the textures/figure out how to apply them.

A UV layout is not a texture. What dress are you using? It would be easier to guide you through the process.

The normal procedure for applying a texture is:

    1. Select the object in the scene tan (that would be your dress)
    2. select the texture preset you want to apply (either smart content or content library)
    3. doubleclick to apply the texture preset.

Daz 3d manual is...terrible! Most of the time, I can't even find what I've an issue with. In this case, I did find the chapter about applying textures, but even though it explains a lot about textures and the surface panel, I failed to find (or maybe to understand) any explanation about how to find and apply an existing texture. :(

OK, I found a way to apply a texture, but I suspect it's not how I'm supposed to do it. So, I did the following :

-I selected the dress, went into the surface panel, selected "diffuse", clicked on the arrow, picked "browse", selected the file with the texture I wanted to apply in the the original dress folder (basically, I followed what I do when I want to add a background image to the scene). It worked. Is that what I'm supposed to do????

Also, at first, when I browsed, I went to the "material" files (under people/clothing/etc...) instead of the "textures" files (under runtime/textures) and the texture appeared  on *part* of the dress (like the left bottom part and half the back) What happened here????

Ok, even though it's unobvious, it's related : what does the error message "Duplicate IDs were found while reading the file. See the log file for mote details"?

That was for shoes I tried to apply to a character. After this message, the shoes did appear, just not on the feet of the character.

For the texture, what you did is replace the base diffuse map with a different image. What that doesn't do is change the specular (highlights) or transparency (like it if had lace trim) or something that loading the whole material setting would. Normally, if this was created for Daz Studio and the item was called "Fancy Dress", you will find the structure to be something like...

    • People\Genesis 8 Female\Clothing\"Fancy Dress"\Materials\Iray ... and in that folder you'll find files that you can double click to load the textures for you.

IF, however, this is older content that was created for Poser, you'll need to look in the Poser Format of your content library. Counterintuitively, the material settings for most items are stored in a sub-folder under "Poses". Since naming conventions changed over time, it can be hard to say where you will find them. Some possiblities you might look for include...

    • "Fancy Dress MAT" or "MAT Fancy Dress" or "<artist's name>\Fancy Dress" ... it can vary a lot, but the files should be there to fully load the textures and other settings for you.

Like Bee mentioned, it would be easier if we knew what outfit you were working with.

I have that dress - it's quite an old one (for the original Genesis figure).

The texture presets can be found here: People/Genesis/Clothing/Pusey Designs/Dresses/Materials/Summertime Dress
I don' believe that dress would appear in Smart Content (unless it has been updated recently - I downloaded it back in 2013 when it was "new"), so you need to select the dress in the scene tab, navigate to that library in Content Library tab and double-click the material preset you want (there are 6 of them to choose from).

There are some basic tutorial videos available, have you already tried them? https://www.daz3d.com/help/help-daz-3d-video-tutorials

Other than that, as MelanieL said, the texture preset in this case is found in the content library. Please check if there's a preset under the location she has posted.

Thanks, I did find it. In fact, since it was a "texture", I didn't expect to find it in the library content, but rather in a tab,  so I didn't search very long in the content, rather opening all menus I could think of in "surfaces", "parameters", etc...

Searching in the content library is a pain, by the way, and more and more so as the number of files I downloaded is growing. Things often aren't where I would expect them to be, and aren't necessarily labelled in an informative way, so I often end up opening all the folders in order until I find what I'm searching, and sometimes have to look up online for the name of the product to figure out what it is for. I'm not sure how you people who have been at it for years and presumably have thousands of files can ever find anything.

Yes, I'm looking at tutorials, and learn things from them, but hardly ever manage to find an answer to a specific question I have in them. For instance, in this case, I searched for "how to install textures" or something similar, and found a lot of (relatively) advanced infos about textures, but not the simple "textures included in a product are to be found in the content library and are applied in the same way a "material" is by double clicking on them". At the contrary it rather misled me into thinking that adding a texture was some (relatively) complicated process, that I would find the texture in some elusive corner of Daz 3D and that applying it would be some multi-step process involving a number of menus and tabs.

Installing textures is not the same as applying them. wink

I think that using the term "texture" is sometimes a bit misleading, as what it really is in 99% of the cases is a material preset.  But you'll find that often, such terms are used in a blurry way (shader and shader preset being abother one that mean different things but the terms are often used exchangable), and that makes it not really any easier when you're thrust into this whole cnfusing 3D-World thing. Been there, done that, became frustrated. smileyheart
