Google "IES light files" and you'll find a bunch.

There was a thread on the old forum.

You can google *.ies files to get some download links for the specific light type.

Cheers. Just thought there was a few thrown in, the way we had HDRi backgrounds in the past if I'm not mistaken. Thanx for replies. Gotta love the forums :)

Add a light to your scene. Try a spot.

In the EFFECTS tab for that light scroll down to PHOTOMETRIC LIGHTING.

Load an IES file and enable.

IBL is a subset of HDRI, which Carrara supports.

ok, guys, can you provide some links to some decent .ies files coz the ones I downloaded just don't seem to work for me. I can see no difference whatsoever in the renders, whether photometric lights is enabled or not. Or am I missing something? Is there other settings I should know about?

The image on the left is a standard spot. The image on the right is the same spot with the IES file from this light applied:

Each one of the Iluminarc lights has an IES profile on it's page. Play with some of those. They should give you some good results.

Carrara uses HDRIs in the Scene's Background slot. Select, Scene, from the Instances palette and then look up towards the top of the screen for Effects tab. Use the pulldown menu to select HDRI. To get the effect of the HDRI, simply go to the Render room and enable the Skylight option. Don't forget to also enable the GI version o,f Light Through Transparency, as well as the, Light Through Transparency, in the main render settings.

Bonus: Carrara can use anything you can load in the Background slot like an IBL if you enable the Skylight option. It'll use a plain old image, color, color gradient, etc. It won't be quite as dynamic or accurate, but it still can look really good!

You are right concerning the HDRIs, but what I miss is the possibility to use a high dynamic, low resolution images for lighting and a low dynamic very high resolution image for the background at the same time.

Pretty sure you can do that, though I'm rendering at the moment and can't go double check. You would put the high dynamic, low resolution image in the 'background' channel and the low dynamic, high resolution image in the 'backdrop' channel (both background and backdrop are in the scene tab, as in Evil's screenshot)

http://www.gelighting.com/LightingWeb/na/resources/tools/ about halfway down the page are two things. The first is Light Beams, which will give you a preview of what each of their lights should look like. Right next to it is IES Profiles.

You can in in the Background use the HDRI file and the Backdrop use the low dynamic and high resolution image such as JPG.

Actually, the best way is to hide all objects in the scene, put the high resolution image in the background and make a render (ideally twice the size of final render). This render is very fast as only the background is visible. Save the image and place it in the backdrop slot. Replace the background with the high dynamic low resolution image, unhide all objects and you can now render. Process is to be repeated every time you change the camera position, orientation or focal length.

I really like the photometric lights I just wish there was some type of preview within the light setup box to see how the light would be with out having to do a render. Other 3D applications have this. Something to think about for version 9.
