How do I install DAZ on DRIVE D

My old computer died.  When looking for a replacement, I discovered that the new computers usually have a small Drive C (an SSD) and a much larger traditional Drive D.  The problem is DAZ automatically installs on Drive C.  How do I get DAZ to install in the more spacious Drive D and have the DAZ Install Manager always load my purchased DAZ files to Drive D as well?  I WOULD REALLY APPRECIATE SOME HELP!  I miss not not having DAZ.

Thank you.

  • Launch Install Manager, select Work Offline, and you can click the gear icon at top-right to open Preferences, then in the Instalaltion tab add the folder you wish to use and set it as Current. You will then need to update Daz Studio to use the same folder, and also to move the folders in your Docuemnts folder if you had not moved the documents folder itself before any installation. You can download http://docs.daz3d.com/doku.php/public/software/dazstudio/4/referenceguide/scripting/api_reference/samples/file_io/install_manager_config_import/start , drag it into the DS Viewport, and let go to automatically add the folder set in DIM to DS' content directories.

  • I really appreciate your effort to answer my question.  Unfortunately, I got lost halfway through the instructions.  Maybe it's my fault for not being very clear.  I am getting a new computer that does NOT have DAZ or the Install Manager or anything else installed yet except Windows 10.  I don't see how I can make the modifications you described when nothing has been put on the new machine.  Is there some way to direct DAZ Studio and the Install Manager during the initial download process to install on Drive D instead of landing on Drive C and then going through some process to relocate it, and redirect all future DAZ purchases, to Drive D?

If this is possible, a step by step explanation would be most welcomed.  Remember I am a newbie after all.  wink Thank you.

I keep loosing this, and the bookmark to it . . .

    1) Install DIM - just take the default, it's only going to use around 50 MB all up with the tracking files that get installed on the C drive as you install content.

    2) Fire up DIM; select "Work Offline" then click on the gear icon, top right, for the settings menu.

First, in the downloads tab, set the "Download to" Directory; in your case, "D:\dim-download" should work; while you're here, double-check the list of items to show in the available list.

Now the Installation tab; set a 32-bit and a 64-bit directory for software; I use "D:\bits-32" and "D:\bits-64" (They MUST be different!). Set at least one content install directory; in my case, "D:\s4stuff\gen5" (I used to have 18 directories; now I'm down to 4 and this is the only one DIM installs to). This directory will need to be defined to Studio (coming up next)

    3) Now install Studio (just the application - we're not ready to do the content just yet) and Postgres (there are several that should be showing, but only one can be installed at any given time - so use the 64-bit PostgreSQL CMS package.

    4) Now we can start Studio; click on the Content Library tab and then the Options menu (the little triangle and horizontal lines block); select Content Directory Manager. Click on the "+" by DAZ Studio Formats to expand the list. Then click on "DAZ Studio Formats" and then "Add" over to the left. Add the directory you defined to DIM as a content directory ("D:\s4stuff\gen5" for me).  Select this new directory (came in at the bottom of the list) and move it to the top.

You may want a couple of additional directories - I have one for all non-DAZ content ("D:\s4stuff\3rd-party") and one for things I make/customize ("D:\s4stuff\mydata"). Add them if you wish, and move them up the list so they are next under the DIM directory.

Now repeat for the "Poser Formats" entry; you'll get a warning that no runtime was detected on the DIM directory; add it anyway. Same for 3rd-party if you decided to create it. Again, move these to the top. Click "Accept".

This should do what you want.

You also need to change the path for "DAZ Connect data" if you plan to install content via Connect. There's only one path for Connect so you will have to modify it, not add a new one.
This directory must specific to Connect content, not one you use to install with DIM.

Thanks - shows how long ago I put this together. smiley

  • THANK YOU for your specific directions.  I admit it will likely take me a while to absorb all that information, but I will stick with it until I do.

The support in this New Users form from people like youselves has been really wonderful.  Thanks again.

  • One more question:  I always install items I've purchased from DAZ using the DIM.  What do you mean by "DAZ Connect data?"  Is this another way to install content?

Yes, you can have DS connect to your account (Connect menu), then once it has downloaded the details of what you currently own right-click on a product inside DS (in the Products list in the Content Library pane or the products tab of Smart Content), or double-click an unisntalled item in either of those lists or in the Install pane to install via Connect. Not everything will install this way. One advantage is that updates will need to download only those files which have changed, not the whole zip as with DIM.

Why can't you just allow people to install on whatever drive, instead i have to do all this [stuff] to get something to work when it should be just set at installation. This is [silly] auto installing on C drive.

Spent 600 dollars on a seperate drive for DAZ3D, windows is on a smaller drive, why must you create something that requires so much hassel to set everything to work on other drives, I spent heaps on content now i have to re program the thing just to get it to work on D drive. Awesome work. Just like half your artists that forget to add half the content with there products. Do i need to buy the super advanced [] version to swap drives without learning how to map every file location in a data tree.

You don't have to do anythign more than tell the application where to put the content - you certainyl don't (bugs and errors aside) need to fiddle around with the data/folder tree. The new daz Central does, I think, ask which drive to use and goes from there - at the expense of custom paths, which many of us want, but it's there as an option.

I'm having this exact same problem, I set both Daz Studio and Hexagon to install on D:/ and yet it keeps installing on C:/

Please attach the image, don't try to embed it. How are you installing? What is/are the path settings?
