Earth Model

Hello, I'm totally new here, and I'd like to have an earth model for a video logo I'm designing.

I couldn't find anything of this nature on my Carrara 4 Pro content CD, but possibly there are 3D models of the earth that one of you have designed already, or maybe a resource page for free models like this.

Alternatively, I could try to build one myself, using the sphere as a beginning, but I wouldn't know how to import continents - land masses. I think if I had a world map it would be possible to wrap it around the sphere. Any ideas on where I could get a map, and also how I could apply it to the surface of a sphere?

Many thanks,

Keith

    Will This one do?

Create primitive - sphere and use the texture maps here:

There's also ready-to-go models. For example

Thanks, but I found a spread-out image of the world map on Google Images that I'd like to use, as it just has land mass outlines. I think I should be able to bend it around a sphere in Carrara, however I find that I'm having trouble importing it. I go to File menu and to Import, but the file is greyed out. I tried converting it to several formats the book says I can use to import 2D images - like BMP,, Tiff, PSD, or others...but they are also greyed out. Copy and Paste doesn't work either. I'm on a Mac, btw.

    Any advice appreciated.

The challenge seems to be to get the jpeg into the Carrara work space. File>Import doesn't do it. There's a pull-down list of files Carrara apparently accepts, but none of the formats seem familiar. Maybe there's a way to convert to those formats?

I also found a ready made 3D earth model in Sketch Up warehouse that would be perfect, as it has transparent oceans, so it looks hollow inside.(see bottom globe image) It would be great if I could somehow get that into Carrara, though it is a .skp file format. There must be a way. But if I have to, I'd be happy enough just importing the 2D world map (top image), to wrap around a sphere.

    thanks

(Later, after more trying) It's enough to drive one round the bend. The Carrara user manual clearly states that "You can use these file formats to import or export 2D images or import files as texture maps"...and they list Photoshop, PICT, GIF, JPEG, TIFF, Targa.

The pull-down in the import list also lists Lightwave (LWO) and I downloaded one of those from a free 3D model site. What happens there is that I seem to be able to import it, and there's a progress bar at the top, but then a window opens that says the file can't be found and I should relocate it. (??) I tried placing the file on another volume, but still no luck. What's happening?

I don't think there's any tech support for Carrara anymore, so if any of you can help that would be very appreciated.

    thanks again.

Have you tried asking in the Carrara Discussion thread.
    http://www.daz3d.com/forums/categories/66/

I've only just got Carrara, so I'm of no help to you I'm afraid, especially if its an older version.
Try asking there, this thread is more general and I'm guessing mostly Daz Studio and Poser.

Many thanks!..will certainly try that one - should get a solution.
As for older version, I can't think that the newer one is that different, since earliest v.1 by Eovia is essentially the same.
