PropViewer is a free utility that can be used to open 3ds files (as well as others) and exprort them as Poser (pp2) or obj files. http://www.sharecg.com/v/38800/related/11/Poser/Prop-Viewer-3
Unfortunately, it's PC only, so that wouldn't do any MAc users any good, unless they have a Windows Emulator.
Greentoken has a free online converter that will do 3ds > obj conversions: http://www.greentoken.de/onlineconv/
On another subject, has anyone seen any store fronts or street fronts? I currently have AntFarm's Window Shopping http://www.daz3d.com/window-shopping, as well as Victorian Street Front http://www.daz3d.com/victorian-street-front, but would love suggestions for others. The Central District Subway is great, but it's got a subway station. http://www.daz3d.com/the-central-district-subway

http://www.sharecg.com/v/50625/gallery/5/3D-Model/Coney-Coffee-Cafe and there is this one from page 65 of this thread: https://www.cgtrader.com/free-3d-models/architectural-exterior/cityscape/nyc-block-set-8#
One here as well
https://www.cgtrader.com/free-3d-models/architectural-exterior/street-infrastructure/building-row
take a look at this one. it's a whole street!

Thank you all -- I can probably make an entire pedestrian mall for free from this stuff.
As a side note, anyone interested in vintage autos should really check out Birdman's ShareCG portfolio. He has a beautiful selection of 3ds classic cars, including, for example, a 1937 Packard hearse: http://www.sharecg.com/v/79205/gallery/5/3D-Model/37-Packard-Hearse
Also, in case anyone wants lawn mowers / lawnmowers, Birdman also has several, none of which are titled "lawn mower" or "lawnmower," so I thought I'd link them here in case someone is searching the forums for one. They all appear to be noncommercial only, as they are models of real lawn mowers / lawnmowers.
Vincent Mower: http://www.sharecg.com/v/84322/gallery/5/3D-Model/Vincent-Mower
Atomic Yardmaster: http://www.sharecg.com/v/84296/gallery/5/3D-Model/Atomic-Yardmaster
Victa Mower: http://www.sharecg.com/v/84278/gallery/5/3D-Model/Victa-mower
Deco Mower [my favorite -- goes well with all your midcentury cars with tail fins!]: http://www.sharecg.com/v/84259/gallery/5/3D-Model/Deco-Mower
I don't even like lawn mowers, and now I want to collect them all!

EDIT: I found another storefront/street front model on CGTrader:
PolyPixel Freebie Pack [obj]: https://www.cgtrader.com/free-3d-models/architectural-exterior/street-infrastructure/polypixel-freebie-pack
Thanks adding both to wishlist!
I'm looking for a straw hat, the battered kind an old farmer or scarecrow might wear.
Cheers.
Unfortunately I need lots of points before I can download from CGTrader.
Was that the correct link? It looks like just one shop and not a whole street to me.
Points? I just logged in with my Google details and was able to download.
This is what I get when I push the free download button
Not free but there is one in this set: http://www.daz3d.com/deadcorn-ii
Yes, that's the right link. I know it looks like 1 shop, but the whole scene consists of 5 buildings, a main street and 3 side streets. A couple of the buildings are shops with loaded shelves. You will have to do a bit of adding materials to finish it up. Also, the .obj file for the main town is in the wrong folder.
Thanks. From the product page and promos I would never have guessed all that was included
Just look at a few items on their site and "like" them. You can do 20 likes per day. So in 4 days you can download 5 new items from them. You can comment as well, of course then it is faster. First I didn't know what to think of that message but I tried and it works.
I'm looking for buildings and clothing for Colonial America circa 1680, or 17th century in general. It doesn't have to be perfectly accurate, just reasonably accurate.
There're plenty of items for men, especially with some minor modifications—pirates, musketeers, etc.—but I'm not finding much for women. Wilmap's Pilgrim Fathers outfits will probably be useful, and there's the MFD Pilgrim Dress Texture at ShareCG. For pay, there's the Constance dress that just came to DAZ from RuntimeDNA. Otherwise, most of what I'm seeing looks like it's for rich women rather than common folk. Have I missed something?
As for buildings, the Salem sets here look great, and so do the Sleepy Hollow and Jamestown buildings from Meshbox elsewhere, but they're pricey. I did pick up Skull Cove and those buildings should be useful. But additional cheap or free buildings could help enormously.
Tortuga over at renderosity is not free, but it's not horribly expensive.
https://www.renderosity.com/mod/bcs/tortuga-port-of-pirates/69397
Free: http://www.sharecg.com/v/59641/related/5/3D-Model/Colonial-House In 3ds format so you will have to convert it.
Muralist over at Rendo used to have a nice set of Colonial buildings but they don't seem to be available the any longer
Edit to add: I found the Muralist set over at VP: http://www.vanishingpoint.biz/productdetail.asp?productID=1585
Charlie Judge, thanks! I wish I understood how Birdman decides which items are okay for commercial renders. In this case, I'm hoping I'll be doing a commercial project, so that house should be very useful.
ETA: And thanks for chasing down the Muralist set. I'll bookmark that now.

fleetpp, Tortuga does look nice, but it has more Spanish influence than I'm looking for. Stilll, it's something I'd love to get someday.

Clothing
https://www.wilmapsdigitalcreations.co.uk/view_product.php?id=88 with out the overskirt but for middle class it can be used.
https://www.wilmapsdigitalcreations.co.uk/view_product.php?id=227 The skirt can be used.
https://www.wilmapsdigitalcreations.co.uk/view_product.php?id=57 and https://www.wilmapsdigitalcreations.co.uk/view_product.php?id=58 Dress 1 would be acceptable for peasants of that time period.
https://www.wilmapsdigitalcreations.co.uk/view_product.php?id=234 for the waistcoat
https://www.wilmapsdigitalcreations.co.uk/view_product.php?id=229 for the apron and one type of head covering.
http://trumarcar.francemi.net/vicky_tc.htm 4th down for another type of head covering
and finally materials for that time period (these are just png files that will have to be manually loaded):
http://www.sharecg.com/v/49664/gallery/6/Texture/Natural-Dyes-Digital-Cloth
http://www.sharecg.com/v/54697/gallery/6/Texture/Rough-Woollen-Cloth-1
http://www.sharecg.com/v/54760/gallery/6/Texture/Rough-Woven-Wool-Digital-Cloth-II
A note for those trying to find period clothing. For the most part since the 1500's the design of the dress for women has been pretty constant. It is all of the bits and bobs that change through the years. So a modern gathered long dress with a tight bodice and long sleeves is very close to a 1560 dress silhouette.
DollyGirl, those are great resources, and I admit, I hadn't even thought about what textures would be useful. Thank you!
I was able to track one of them down at http://poserclub-cab.net/pf/free-staff/prpos/f126/, with a veil and a feather.
Hey, anyone know where I can find one if these:
It's hard to see that small image. What is it?
The lightsaber training remote from Star Wars: A New Hope
Free (or donation) in choice of 3Ds or lightwave format: http://scifi3d.com/details.asp?intGenreID=10&intCatID=18&key=473 Click on desired format to download
Also one over at Turbo but pricey: http://www.turbosquid.com/3d-models/3d-star-wars-training-droid-model/978213
Yeah, I need Poser or DAZ formats, OBJ at minimum.
