Ambitious intentions _ 1st project is the Bird People
Not to lead anybody astray you know.
Lucked into this amazing book with PICTURES of, are you ready, BONES.
okay, actually they are drawings, very well done works of art in themselves of Skeletons ... done by somebody who actually knows what a skeleton is.
The book is called The Resurrectionist [NOT to be confused with The Resurrection] and the cover art is of a humanoid with wings in what appears to be a very logical place. NOT popping out of the back like a bird's.
Possible critters I can choose from:
Sphinx Alatus
Siren Oceanus
Satyrus Hircinus
Minotaurus Asterion
Ganesha Orientis
Chimaera Incendiarius
Canes Hades
Pegasus Gorgonis
Draconis Orientis
Centaurus Caballus
Harpy Erinyes
These being rather extinct critters there are of course, no coloured finished photos of them however Harpy Erinyes looks rather interesting. Lots of plates. Male and Female innards even, fetus and egg ... as in the egg that gets laid for the fetus to hatch out of.
Conceivably hunted to extinction is the Centaurus Caballus. The mane [nothing fantastic here] runs down the humanoid's back to his rump which happens to be the horse part's withers. Looks like a rather painful skeleton. Horse type tail.
Horse with Wings!!!! The wings come out near the top of the withers.
Canes Hades --- dog like creature with 3 similar heads and a serpent type tail. A pack of real specimens was found. Some had 2 or 3 heads and one of them had 6.
... interesting reading for sure.
............... edit to add .... and it's a book of fiction! Found a link here: click here [hope nobody was surprized by that, however the artwork is amazing none the less]

Progress! What comes first, the birdman or the egg? Why the egg of course!
One makes a sphere, squishes it abit, uvmaps it, etc ... "one harpy egg". I made a .cr2 so the egg can be split in half. Have no idea how many would be in a clutch ... presumably not too many. Anyway I think everybody knows how to make a sphere so I shall carry on and see what tomorrow brings ;-)
Looks like an interesting and challenging project :)
Looking forward to seeing your progress!
P.S. How about posting some pics of those strange creatures and make a modelling challenge of it - as you did with the bulldog?
Thought of doing that but we weren't exactly flooded with bulldogs and figured people are mostly shopping or playing with their new purchases.
Few other details I need to check first too. Like if any of these images are already available online somewhere ;-)
Okay ... have put together a few images ... if people want to work on this too, that would be great. We'll have a flock of Harpies flying all over the place lol ... think we'd better aim for an end of the month deadline for "something" as that's the season for such renders, yes?!
I've been calling this a fetus; actually embryo may be more accurate. Truth be told, a lot of these things look very much alike as far as I'm concerned.
So for inside the egg ... here's the start of our little critter ...
images are named sequentially
And some more ...
And more and more ...
Wait until you see the adults!!!
Good luck with this project.
Not the way I would of approached it. But that's one of the things about 3D modelling, there are different ways of making the same object.
Thanks.
This little .obj is just to be 'something' to put inside the egg so not going all out to make it super 3D, rigged, etc. All they do is 'grow' lol ...
One of the other methods is by creating a series of face normals ... others have great tutorials about for the modeling of faces, heads, bodies, etc ... and me thinks the TOS would flip if I posted those things.
.................................
I noticed something about the book advertized and shown on the 'Net ... it plainly states that it's a work of pure fiction ... BUT ... the copy I bought most definitely does not show that information so plainly. Indeed quite the opposite. It DOES say it's fiction as in a fictional biography of Dr. Black but there's this whole page from the Publisher indicating that indeed there was a Dr. Black and that people had sent in plates and letters for the book from all over. And that I had read in the store and figured great because plates that old are basically public domain and I could use them. However in reading through information found on the 'Net now ... it appears that the entire book is a work of fabrication and that the artist created all the images. As he's alive and well, I sent him a permission request and a link to this thread so shall wait and see now if continuing this tutorial with his images is okay with him.
Finished the little fella ... hehehe ... "fun with shaders" ...
Not into detailing this myself ... but if one wants to, the more mesh provided, the more you can work with, now or later in morphing.
Bit of a storm right now so pics have to wait.
YES!!!!
So onward shall the project go.
edit ... okay as there was no interest in a competition that's been scrapped.
Will continue with my own wip ... eggs and something to put inside them done.
Next comes the birdman.
Hope everybody saw that curious video of a dragon flying over in Europe someplace ... hehehe ... okay ... [flies like a plastic toy]
Back to Bird People:
Covering some more modeling hmmm ... techniques!
Feel free to tell me how I should have done this lol ...
End result is a cute little fuzzy.
The next set ...
it's a long one!
hope this helps somebody ...
These are numbered in sequential order.
Almost there ...
And the last for this set.
Wow. This is super duper. I went and bought the book for future reference. Looks like later this week I'll have the time to explore. looking forward to the next set.
Ed
That's great! :-)
Getting ready to work on the next set ... have been practicing some "people rigging" to see what's what. Unless one is an expert rigger [I would love a doner rig!] I'm going to go with suggesting we keep this model as simple as possible. Forget the inside of the head parts. As skills develop, models can be improved ;-)
Here is an idea as to the images I've prepared for to use on the Hexagon grid. My scans are "low quality" and the images are kept to about 1000 square as there is no need to tax Hexagon's memory with huge image files.
Decide your goal, skeleton or figure ... I'm going with the figure however one still does need to know where the bones go! For legacy rigging the model must be "grouped" for each bone.
And continuing on ...
And the knee bone is connected to the .... thigh bone ... and the ...
After drafting in the main sections, time to turn the object around.
Tonight's batch ... 1 of 4
Drafting in some talons, and fleshing out the bone structure somewhat.
And some more ...
And the last for this set.
Wings will be fun ... could be awhile though lol ;-)
Well, I've tried those wings from 2 different directions ... maybe it's because I kept so many birds ... have a little trouble believing these things could fly anywhere ... anyhow ... I know many here also use Blender ... and some of this information can certainly translate over to Hexagon as well:
http://vimeo.com/11345968 "Modeling Feathery Wings"
Not all feathers are the same size ... flight ones nearer the end of the wing are longer. If trimmed, flyer cannot gain altitude nor fly at break neck speed [which is the whole idea of trimming a bird's wings].
As there's a variance in type of wing [feathers or leather] and direction for fold ... one will need to make some decisions to achieve the desired finish.
When the wing line is decided upon, thickening it will provide some bone mesh. Model it to the basic shape desired. Fill in with "leather" or 'feathers' as desired. For the humanoid part ... there are videos for modeling the ear, hands, heads, faces, etc.
I have been working on, and released some other items ... this is still on the burners ... will see what happens in time ;-)
