Racing Balls - animation created for CarraraTors weekly challenge

Here's a link to an animation I created for the CarraraTors weekly challenge; this week we were suppose to create an animation showing a bouncing ball. This provided an opportunity to consider using keyframe animation, physics, or the bounce modifier. I used keyframe animation.

The set, characters, painting, texturing, etc. was all done in Carrara (composited the movie in After Effects). I also used Fenerics ERC to control the movement of part of one of the characters.

Good work, CyBorgTy. I assume the ERC control was for the pony tail?

Yes. I wanted to use ERC on a project for a while. So I decided to use it here. There are a couple of different ways to accomplish the motion using ERC. One option would require you manually move one of the bones in the ponytail's bone hierarchy up and down (setting keyframes), but I did not want to do that. The option I chose does not require key-frames on the ponytail's bones. The ponytails IK target tracked a target helper, which through ERC was set to be positioned where another target helper was 2 frames go (set to move with a 2 frame delay). Pretty cool.

I have plans to use ERC more. However, I discovered when network rendering with 8.5, I do not get the expected results. I have a post in the forum regarding the problem. Fenric has responded saying he will look into it. Apparently it did not have network rendering problems with 8.1.

I also have Fenric's Carrara ERC but have not used it yet. Sounds like it may have advantages over the usual keyframe approach, let us know how it goes. I did not upgrade to C 8.5, stlll using 8.1, so maybe I can avoid the problem (although I'm not network rendering, so maybe there is no problem ...) The purchased items I have with ERC seem to work well.

ERC adds a lot to Carrara animation tools and workflow. It helps position Carrara closer to the higher end 3D packages (One feature/aspect of ERC is like the 'set driven key' feature in Maya). ERC should be part of Carrara's base set of tools.

I'll share my experiences as I become more familiar with it.

Thanks, I really do want to learn about ERC.

So Carrara can compete with Maya? With a little support from DAZ? OK, sorry, my bad ... it seems Cararra supporters are in the minority ...

I believe ERC gives Carrara needed capabilities. But with the shortcomings of some of the existing features (and lack of others), it will not directly compete with Maya.:P

Yes, my comment was tongue-in-cheek. As I've mentioned, I do enjoy creating short animations in C8, mostly due to its seamless handling of my embarrassingly large collection of Poser style content. I've never used Maya, the highest level program I've used is Lightwave, and found it sort of intimidating/cumbersome. But I never really gave it a chance after I discovered that Carrara would do pretty much everything I need. One exception is some Vue content that I really like, e.g.:

(Note especially the Steampunk Submarine, Helicopter, and Air Ship)

I have no interest in modelling, but for animation, can Maya handle Poser content as easily as Carrara? I..e direct loading (no "import") with all the pose dials, textures, etc.? I know there are tools like Collada (even Smith Micro mentions limitations), Poser Fusion, etc., but are they as seamless as Carrara's handling of Poser content?

With Poser fusion its possible to open pz3 files. You will animated and make updates in Poser, save the file, and refresh in Maya to get the update. The integration is not like you have with Carrara. You can change the shaders but I don't remember any animation dials (It s been a while since I used/played with it).

OK, thanks. Carrara's Poser importer is a truly nice piece of programming. As somebody once said, "It just works."
