Leg showing through clothing during animation

I have a situation in which during a small, but noticable, timeframe character's leg shows through the skirt during animation (walking, when the leg is raised). Does anyone know what parameters control this and what I can do to try and mitigate this issue. Thanks !

It all depends on the skirt object. If it has bones, you may be able to adjust the x/y/z translate of that particular area (hip, pelvis, thigh, etc). If not, and there isn't a morph to adjust the fit, you'll probably have to create your own dformer to morph the skirt the way you need it.

I've had to do this before when an object didn't behave *exactly* how I wanted. Sometimes it can be pretty easy; other times, it can be a huge PITA.

Here's a great video tutorial on how to create a morph. Over and above what I've read about creating morphs, actually seeing it done in a step-by-step format was invaluable to me. The sound, however, is quite low so turn up your speakers (or headphones) http://youtu.be/T3ZhPeRDHHo

Thanks - I'll take a look at the tutorial and see if that will help

A thing always astonishes me on this forum, one seldom knows about which software one speaks…

well we assume Daz studio if unnamed.
if it were Carrara or Poser I would have a fair few suggestions for fixing it!
psssst target helpers, track handles, hybrid dynamics to name some

I have also had this problem a number of times. My first reaction is to avoid loose fitting clothing (like skirts) from animated characters, and use pants instead. (In fact, I even avoid buying loose fitting outfits in the first place.) Another suggestion is to focus the camera on the upper body during that part of the animation, establishing the skirt, if necessary, in a different section were there is no leg movement.

You can also try making body parts invisible, e.g. the leg in your case. (In fact, some clothing models come with injectable files to do that for the underlying body parts.) But this requires that the skirt cover the entire body part in all frames.

I have tried the various ways to adjust the clothing during the animation (magnets? morphs? etc.?) and found it to be a lot of trouble.

Without full physics and dynamic cloth, it will be impossible to get 100% coverage, 100% of the time with no poke through...

That said, the work arounds and cheats, mentioned above are the best you can do.

And even in RL, with a big budget, movie studios do all sorts of 'cheats' to get the shot right...so don't feel bad if you've got to block the shot differently or zoom in or something, it's all part of creating a reality of your own.

Mel Gibson, the director (he said he wants to be an actor), talked about cutting a few frames out, just before an auto crash, so the crash seemed to happen more suddenly. This is what we see in movies.

(At the screening I attended long ago, "Wait Until Dark" with Audrey Hepburn got a big reaction at one point from the audience, but I think I see how they "cheated")

It's DAZ - being that this is "www.daz3d.com/forums/" I'd think it's safe to assume that if a product is not named it would default to daz3d.

Also - one thing I've found in the meanwhile is that this seems to be happening only after FBX export. So the FBX-exported figure somehow gets messed up - the original Daz3D scene seems OK. I assume it's probably due to various Daz settings like collisions, smoothing, etc that the skirts work better in Daz app, but I'd expect that exporting this to FBX would record all the relevant info. Seems like it doesn't though.

To follow up on that comment

DAZ 3D is the name of the Company.

The software they own and sell includes Bryce, Carrara, DAZ Studio and Hexagon. It is possible to do animation in at least 3 of those programs.

DAZ 3D also sell some 3rd party software, as resell items, including a version of Vue and iClone.

So it is helpful if the OP does mention which software they are using, unless of course they are posting in the program specific sub forum, when it can normally be taken as a given.

The Commons, Animation, Nuts and bolts, Art Studio and Members Only forums are program neutral, as is the New Users Area.

    Thank you Chohole…
And that could even a little boost the activity on this forum because when one does not know what one speaks, one does not take the trouble to be interested in the topic.
But I understand well, myself, I only start to make the difference between different forums…
