Transparency problem

I'm struggling getting an object to look transparent. I played with all the settings, but it always looks white. Suggestions?

if its 100 % transparent you wont see it. try putting in a ground plane and some lites, some other objects. play with hilites and shininess, reflection. put in a wall... something for the transparency to react to

The problem was the color channel. I had to darken it a lot.

Two things, first is that you have presets of glass in your content, the second, it is that you have a alpha channel in your shader…

The alpha channel is set to "none" and all my presets disappeared when I upgraded to 8.5 :(

    Eric,

Here is a quick render using the "crystal" preset. I added an HDRI image to give it some reflection. That helps it look more glass like. The second image is the shader tree so you can reproduce it yourself. I hope it helps. I added a couple more screen shots so you can see the rest of the settings.

I was going to suggest that there may be two domains a top and the side. The side appeared transparent and the top appeared opaque. The color can also effect it as you discovered.

Also, I think DUDU's point about the alpha channel was misunderstood. If you have it off, your object will be opaque. If you use a slider, you can adjust the alpha to make it completely opaque, to completely transparent and all point in between. The difference between the alpha channel and the transparency channel, is that the alpha channel does not have any refraction, absorption, etc. It's kind of like adjusting the opacity in Photoshop.
